Ms. HelpfulMs. Helpful: This mix comes with everything you need (dough mix, filling, icing, colored sugar, even the baby), and the directions are simple and easy to follow, even without a fancy stand mixer. In fact, it was fun to mix the dough in the zipper bag provided while I watched TV. The end result is perfect, moist, dense, delicious king cake - EXACTLY like I was served in New Orleans during Mardis Gras a few years ago. And for less than I paid for a king cake from a local bakery, which wasn't as authentic tasting.
Pro Tip: If you plan to take the cake to a party (like I did), think ahead and make sure you shape the rising cake in a way that it will fit your cake carrier (may need to be more round than oval, or stay under a certain length). I made the mistake of not doing this, and ended up having to cut a piece out of the oval, and pieced it back together before frosting the cake, to make it fit.

Julian VuJulian Vu: The Amazon reviews were overwhelmingly good, but some of the YouTube videos I watched of this thing said the taste was weird. The taste was indeed weird to me - too “chemical” tasting - almost like there was too much fake vanilla extract or something - hard to nail down exactly just knew that it tasted kind of off. Instructions were easy - if you have a stand mixer w/ dough hook you’re gonna get good results. The cake itself came out beautiful and honestly everyone at our party devoured it maybe it’s just me who didn’t like it. Would recommend trying once at least….

jomamatoo: I'm giving this 4 stars - but that is because I think the directions could have been written differently. I've listed a few recommendations that I think might give a better result to other bakers. I bake a LOT, so over the years have figured out some tricks. Hope these help.

The packaging is excellent and EVERYTHING, is included - yes that means the little plastic baby. The directions are easy to follow, BUT, though they say to add "softened" butter to the original dough, I would recommend you MELT and cool the butter a bit. Also, have the egg at room temperature. (You can do this by putting an egg into warm water for about 30 minutes prior to use - and this is good to do for ANY baking project.)

All ingredients in baking should be at room temperature (unless they state otherwise) to ensure that the ingredients get emulsified and better incorporated in the dough. In this recipe it's especially important if you're mixing them in the plastic bag that is also included in the box. (For my family, I added a bit more melted butter, brown sugar and of course pecans to the praline filling, but that's up to your preference.)
