Colin M: Well-constructed, carefully devised, a well-researched novel which will keep you guessing throughout. A most invigorating read.

Amazon Shopper: I love the Louise Penney books, and this one is no exception. The mystery is always interesting; the occasional poetry is beautiful; the subjects, art, and places introduced for me to Google and learn about add much; and the human problems we wrestle with in life ring true and important. The characters also occasionally say something profound enough that I wish to remember it. Thank you, Ms. Penney. I really love your writing, and it has caused me to read more fiction lately than I have in many years.

gloria: I thought it was a great story. It brought so many thoughts to my mind about myself and their is a sad lesson to be learned. I certainly recommend this book.

A Parrish: Must admit in this one I struggled to read the first 2 chapters, then suddenly it just flowed, another beautiful case, the culprit did surprise me, but I wonder how it will effect Three Pines in book 6 and further into the series.

Annie: My favourite Inspector Gamache so far, Louise Penny weaving Canadian art history and ancient culture into the engrossing plot superbly!!

GT: I have never read such good books before. The Gamache series is amazing and the author is remarkable. This one had some very interesting history written into it. These books are incredibly deep. The ending was amazing. It took me a few days to read it, but I found myself trying incredibly hard to figure out how it would end. It was a mystery right up to the end. I have to work to understand the poetry, lol just like one of the characters!
Thanks for another great, but deep read!

samsreviews: A murder investigation centered on the villagers of Three Pines is the driving force behind this captivating story. However, I hasten to add that Louise Penny's descriptions of people, their dress, their homes, the countryside, the weather . . . and the French country cuisine at the bistro in this little village add much to the enjoyment of this novel. Her descriptions are not too sparse, not overdone. Just right. How much fun it would be to drop into Gabri and Olivier's place for a fireside glass of wine and a lovely dinner beginning with "escargot bathed in garlic butter" or "cauliflower and stilton soup with pear and date relish."

Cathryn Conroy: I never read murder mysteries until I started reading Louise Penny, and now I am an avid fan—of both the genre and (especially) this author. Like the other four books that precede this novel, this is expertly written with a compelling whodunit plot, bold and vivid characters that pop off the page, and descriptions of food that will have you hunting down gourmet recipes for tonight's dinner.
In this, the fifth of the 18 (and counting) books in the Chief Inspector Gamache Mystery series, we find the brilliant and endearing Armand Gamache back in the idyllic Canadian village of Three Pines to solve (yet another) murder. (Maybe it's not so idyllic, after all.) Just before daybreak over the very busy Labor Day weekend, a dead body has been found lying on the floor of the bistro that is owned by Olivier and Gabriel, partners in business and life. No one knows the victim. At first glance, he looks like a homeless vagrant. He died after a blunt force blow to the back of his head, which should have resulted in copious amounts of blood. But there is no blood on the bistro floor. Who is this man? Who killed him? Where did the murder take place? Why was the body moved to the bistro?...

J - loves books, reads books: This is, of course, a well written book with a complex and compelling storyline well worth reading. I say ‘of course’ because this book is part of a wonderful series from Louise Penny that of Chief Inspector Gamache and Three Pines. 5th in the series it shows the author is getting better and better with each book. The series starts with Still Life and, as I enjoy these books so much, I would encourage you to start with that one. Because, well, these are more than mysteries these are books about people, human nature and this is a series to immerse yourself in and come to love so many wonderful characters as well as the well written mystery of each book and, also, Gamache himself and his story.
Read it as a one-off if you must but you will miss out on this wonderful alternate world that Louise Penny has created and invited readers to join.
This is an excellent series and I would most certainly recommend this book. I do hope you enjoy it too!
