Comments

Craig: Upon opening the box you'll find the plug and some documentation for setup. Setup involves downloading the TP-Link app Kasa, plugging in the smart plug and following on screen prompts within the app to connect the device.

The Plug
The plug itself is quite large, even more so than the pictures let on. However if used in the top of a two plug receptacle will leave the lower one available. Build quality seems sturdy.

The App
App is easy to navigate and adding in the device is very straightforward taking only a couple of minutes. Once added, control from the app is straightforward. The ability to setup scenes is a nice feature, especially when using multiple devices in the same room. The scheduling is a little difficult to figure out at first. One must click on the device in the list, then use the Schedule/Away/Timer icons at the bottom of the device screen to schedule events.

Pros
- easy to setup
- reliable
- control from anywhere with an internet connection

Cons
- larger than expected
- audible click when powering on/off
- scheduling is a bit convoluted at first

Overall a good product that I would recommend to someone...

PPLab: Great addition to my home automation. Perfect for controlling my bedroom lamp with my google home. The setup was super easy with the TP-Link app. Adding it to Google Assistant was also super easy. Now with a simple voice command I can tun the lamp on and off. The app also lets you program on and off time. I setup the lamp to tun on and off in the morning and at night.

The nice thing about the TP-Link product is that it does not require a bridge. It's easy to add pieces of hardware to you home automation without the high cost of a bridge.

The only negative side to the plug is it's size. It's so big that you can't use the other outlet on the wall plug. It would deserve a 5 star if it would be just a bit smaller.

Reid S: I purchased 2 of the TP-Link HS100 Smart Plugs when the Amazon price dropped to $29.99 for a short period.

Overall, I am impressed with the functionality of these plugs. Set-up was quick and easy with the Kasa app. The app also works well and provides useful information such as device run time. You can also set on/off timers through the app which I find useful.

I purchased these plugs to be able to control non-smart devices with Amazon's Echo and Alexa. I have a lamp connected to one and it works great. When asking Alexa to turn on the lamp, she is able to turn the device on faster than my Philips Hue bulbs respond to Alexa commands.
I have a small space heater connected to the other and it works well and is very convientient.

The biggest downside to these plugs, as others have already mentioned, is the size. The plugs are very large, and block access to other outlets, as well as make them difficult to place furniture in front of them. I look forward to TP-Link releasing the "mini" version of the smart plug.

S&B: The media could not be loaded.  A real gem, configured and running in minutes with several easy management options to configure.
I especially like the fact that it is possible to configure a schedule 7 days 24 hours with virtually no ON and OFF cycle of limitation. The whole, manage simply and efficiently using a smartphone application.

Communication with the module is done through your wireless network, so kept in mind that it should be positioned in a location or network is available in order to have maximum efficiency.

It is also possible to control the module with the application from outside the network. As long as your smartphone has internet access.
My only negative for this product is that its shape makes it impossible to use 2 units per outlet and can affect the second decision, if the male connector of equipment that may be connected is big.

It happened that the socket has lost connection with my wireless network. Following a power failure or electrical variation. Normally it reconnects itself, if this does not happen, unplug the item, reconnect and press and hold the bigger button , the outlet will re-synchronize.

CanadianMapleCanadianMaple: I have been looking for something like this! We go away camping for a good chunk of the summer, and I have been using the old fashioned timers. If anyone was watching my house, they would realize the lights came on everyday at the same time. This Smart Plug gives me the freedom to turn my lights on from the campground, and to schedule a time for them to turn on. The away mode allows me to set up a time for the light to turn on, and I can change the time for each day of the week to appear like someone is in the house. You can schedule up to 32 events on this timer.

It was very easy to install. I downloaded the Kasa app from the App store on my iPhone. I then signed up for an account and then selected my product. There were instructions on my Kasa app on how to connect to my local wifi. I just had to use my iPhone and look in the wifi settings and select the Smart Plug. Once it was selected, the blinking amber and green light turned green. I was immediately able to turn my outlet (light plugged in) off and on. I set it up to turn on in the evenings when it starts to get dark.

I did have a minor issue with the scheduling when I first received this Smart Plug. I was able...

The BIM ArtisanThe BIM Artisan: <Update 6.20.2016> I love these units & cannot wait (though I'm going to have to anyway) for the HS200 TP Link Smart Switch (In-wall light switch) to come to the market per their latest software update note under the 'Whats New'.
I've had my first TP Link Smart Plug (see the original post below) for about 6 weeks now, my second for about 4 weeks & they are working flawlessly. As mentioned in my OP, I wanted a unit for my entertainment center & have since received & installed it. Drove my college student (who's home for the summer) nuts as the power was not on in the mornings. For the 4 weeks since having the second unit (I called it 'the TV power'), she could not figure out how to get power to the TV. She finally unplugged the power strip from the smart plug & plugged it directly into the wall below the HS100. So I finally showed the family how to work them (mainly just so they wouldn't keep unplugging & plugging in the power chords).

On another note, I finally received my Amazon Echo (just in time for Fathers day, wahoo!) and so I now have the Smart Plugs hooked up to the World Wide Web, the Internet super highway, the Internet of Things,...

The WB: Always wanted some home automation system, but in reading the horror stories of the past always made me back off. Happened across this device here at Amazon. For the reduced price, I took the risk and ordered one.

WOW -- what a plug. NO special hub needed. This unit connects directly to your home 2.4 Ghz Wi-Fi router and controlled by the Kasa Android/iOS app that programs and controls your switches. More later.

Unboxed and set up my plug. You will need to have an Android or iOS device to perform the set up. If you do not have one, there is NO way to properly install or use this plug. There is NO web site to perform this task. I give fair warning to you and you can continue your search for a different type of connection set-up.

Downloaded the Kasa app from the Google Play Store to both my Android devices. Proceeded to register for a TP Link remote access account. An email will be sent to the address you provide. After confirming this is really your email account, set up continues. Since I had only one light switch, programming one name was easy. After the app finds your home network (Wi-Fi) enter your security password. Mine is connected to a WPA2-AES Netgear...
