Megan V: Heard a review about this book on NPR. I love Indian food and the recipes sounded perfect. It’s a beautiful book and well written. For a beginner Indian food cooker the book breaks things down and explains the steps well. I read the book (too pretty not to look at all the pages) but haven’t cooked any of the recipes yet. My spices ordered from the recommended places just arrived. Can’t wait to get in the kitchen!

MerryPDXMerryPDX: I bought this book along with a couple others to give as a gift. The others look great and are in good condition for gifting. This one was not. Other reviewers commented on the poor handling of the books they received but I figured that SURELY this would have been addressed as the comments go back quite a ways. Yeah . . .nope. Amazon's sad attempt to protect the book involved wrapping it in a plastic bag. But inside the bag, I discovered that the book had dented corners, and one corner had an obvious cut - as though someone had been careless in opening the shipping box from the publisher and slashed it with a box cutter. The back was dirty. What is the point of putting this in a bag if it's damaged? So, if I could give Amazon 1 star for the packaging, care and shipping, I would. Alternatively, I'd suggest that on future publications, they consider using a different binding process that is not so prone to damage.
The book itself - this is an interesting book. The pages are a nice matte finish and there are plenty of pictures. This book is just as noted - "Indian-ish." There are some traditional Indian items, but there are also some Western dishes and ingredients - for...

Nav: The book is beautiful, fun indian fusion recipes (not all are traditional but there are tips on some indian basics). My only complaint is that the recipes are poorly written, one step can be broken down to 2-3 but instead each recipe has upto 3-4 steps but each step is a long paragraph. Not so easy when you're trying to cook and read in real time so not super user friendly there. I suggest you read the recipes properly before making, they're generally pretty simple so it's not a *huge* deal.

Lucy Han: I never buy cookbooks… but Indian food is my absolute favourite cuisine. I’ve always felt intimidated to attempt cooking these dishes that I treasure so much but This book is the perfect introduction to the basics. I personally love the simplicity and accessibility of these recipes. I’m a home cook, and I cook for practicality. I’m not looking for meals to impress, rather meals to whip up on a Tuesday. So the quick and versatile recipes are perfect! Yes, they’re vegetarian recipes, but the flavourful sauces can really up your meat game! This book helped de-mystify the mysteries of Indian cooking and ingredients. I can’t wait to add these dishes to “food that’s part of my household”. In theme with the Rosie-the-Riveter inspired cover, I CAN DO IT TOO!

NA: I found Priya when she started featuring in BA's youtube videos, and found her recipes to be exactly what I would want - full of flavour, indian-ish and simple to make. I've had this book now for many many months. I have already tried so many of her recipes - some of them many times over, and I keep going back for more. One of the most well-loved coookbooks on my shelf.

Paul: If your new to Indian cooking (and that is an extremely broad category), this book serves as a good introduction to the techniques and dishes found on the subcontinent. Having cooked 70% of the recipes, the only one that I wasn't satisfied with was the tomato rice recipe that is featured here. The rest range from good to fantastic. It also provides a glimpse into the author's family and the perspective and memories food brings, which I didn't read too much of, but what I did read was enjoyable.
Having acquired a very prescriptive traditional Indian cookbook after six months of cooking from Indian-ish, I found that the adaptions the author used for the American kitchen was very useful when I tackled very traditional recipes. For example, the traditional cookbook called for hung yogurt using a device not commonly found in American kitchens. Thanks to Indian-ish, I knew that I could achieve the same result by lining a colander with paper towels.
If you're interested in learning aspects of Indian cooking and don't mind some slight veering into "non-traditionalist" (and very delicious) territory, I'd recommend this book. If you're someone who is well-versed in traditional...

notwithoutit: We genuinely like and use this cookbook. The recipes are not overly complex but instead often simply prepared and straightforward. The book itself has a great layout both for organisation of the recipes and helpful hints and instructions for the beginner cook. It is visually appealing, the personal anecdotes and storeies are great too. We have loved everything we’ve made!

Catherine: This is a lovely cookbook that introduced me to may new authentic Indian dishes. The book is very vegetarian forward, as there are only 4 meat dishes in the cookbook, 1 being chicken and 3 being fish. The veggie recipes are great. It would be an even better cookbook if there were more photos.
