SMLSML: I replaced the original board (62-24044-01) in my 1994 Rheem Criterion RGLH-05EAUER in 30 minutes. As others have stated, if you mark each wire as you remove them (fan, heat, cool, com, M2 etc) it will be easy to switch out boards. The only difference was one of the transformer terminals was marked “24VAC” on the original board and “SEC” on the new board, but the supplied schematic made it obvious. My furnace was manufactured late enough in 1994 so that it already had the needed flame sensor, so no modification was needed.
I removed the old board by releasing the standoffs with pliers and installed the new board reusing 3 of the 4 existing standoffs. The only issue I had was the new thermostat terminals were so tall they would not fit through the existing opening that allows the thermostat connections to be outside of the wiring box. The terminals on old board where flat and the new board has raised terminals. To make it fit I left off the standoff nearest the thermostat terminals and replaced it with a stand-off that doesn’t attach to the box and then it slide easily into place. moondog: Comprehensive comments follow, but for those of you in TL;DR mode, here's the key summary:
1. In addition to turning off power at the breaker box, remember that capacitors on the board can still shock you, so consider wearing latex/vinyl gloves and be careful;
2. Take a photo, be sure to label all your wires as you remove them, and write down their color and the ID on the terminal you pull them from. It's strictly plug and play, no rewiring is necessary. The new board has terminals labeled identically to the old, but they aren't in exactly the same spots as the old board;
3. If your new board has screw terminals for the thermostat wires, strongly consider putting some crimp-on spade terminals on your 'stat wires before starting. Getting the bare wires onto (under) the screw terminals was the hardest, most tedious, part of the job. A real b----.
For those who want more info, here's the long version. I could have paid the furnace repair guy nearly $600 to put a board in for me (that was their quote), but that's a foolhardy expenditure on a 25 YO furnace. I found on the internet USED boards for around $600 and told would cost Me about $800 for install with 0 warranty.
found this board after much research and was inspired by the ones who took the time to review and give tips of how to install this type of boards.
watched many youtube videos and ALL the revies.
ordered and ordered the FLAME SENSOR UPGRADE needed for units that were made before 1994.
took Me 3 hours to remove old one and install the new board and the KIT upgrade. (My unit is on the Attic installed laying and no room to comfortably reach the board or wires)
LABELED ALL THE WIRES before removing. DID read ALL the papers and made sure that was able to identify each of the connections between my old and new board.
shutoff the valve for gas and disconnected power to unit and then, Disconnected each wire and then removed the old board.
CONNECTED the wires and installed the board.
The upgrade kit was not too hard to install since it came with what I need it and easy instructions.
