Hide & Drink Leather Hatchet Blade Cover: Thick, Protective Axe Sheath

Mr. Robert Gordon: I used this with a Husky brand 22 oz. Steel Multi-Utility hatchet. The sheath "fits", however there is enough play that the blade can easily slip out of the sheath if the sheath is tugged on, which defeats the purpose of having a sheath. This needs an adjustable restraining strap or cord that wraps around the shoulder of the axe/hatchet to make this sheath work reliably. Otherwise, the leather and craftsmanship are very good. If you are handy, and can make your own retaining strap, it might be a good project for you.

thumbs: I bought this for my PITTSBURGH 1-1/4 lb. Hickory Axe( Harbor Freight). Ha it cost more than the axe. Anyway I put some work into the axe to make it work better so the sheath is worth the money. I doesn't fit the axe perfectly but with a little foam at the time it works fine. Hard to find a sheath of this axe. The sheath is well made and sturdy.

stoker187: It's really a nice fit. Thick leather and sturdy rivets/snap make up this product. [ I measured my axe-head before purchase ] it fit perfectly, though ''it looked too small when I took it out of the box''. The cost is, in my opinion, a little too pricey. I've worked w/leather in my life and know it doesn't take much (materials considered) to make something like this product. I give 5 stars for the product. 2 stars for the cost. I still however recommend this axe sheath.

J.T.: This is a great little mask for typical carpenters half hatchets. It's better than a full sheath that completely covers the head as it leaves the hammer poll of the half-hatchet exposed for use while still keeping the sharp bit safely covered.

The mask is a single piece of leather folded over at the top and held together with 4 rivets across the bit end. The closure strap is part of the single-piece leather construction; it's not added on after the fact. It fits securely without much play; not oversized at all. The snap closure is fairly stiff and positive; no worries about it coming undone unintentionally. The leather is thick and well-finished, and overall the mask has a quality feel to it. Can't say I'm disappointed.

For the price however, ($20) I think it should be welted and stitched together instead of simply riveted. Over time as the leather stretches over the bit it's possible that the sharp edge of the bit could come into contact with the rivets, dulling the edge and wearing into the rivets until they (possibly) fail. At that point the only remedy is to drill out the rivets and replace them. If the mask was welted and stitched, the sharp edge of the bit...

Alisha macdonald: Wasn’t crazy about it once I put it on my axe doesn’t fit very well not snug and read it would fit it!! Not over happy with it! Nicely made sizes don’t work well!

Alex Bessinger: The quality of the leather is top notch. This is very much an artisan product. However it is too small for my axe. I measured before ordering and it just doesn't fit. I just can't get the button to click and it's only by millimetres. Granted, I haven't tried soaking it to see if I can stretch to size. If that is what is expected with this product, I wish there was a disclaimer saying as much. Will use on another axe or hatchet that it does fit otherwise. Still a great product.

Will re-post after attempting to stretch.
