Scott: I read this book around Halloween each year. I find new perspectives and insights every time. A must read for anyone interested in classic literature and just, quite simply, a good and unique story.

HipShooter: Forget about Boris Karlof and Mel Brooks. This book is where it all began, with Mary Shelly in 1816. This short novel, riveting and scary, focuses on the monster who talks and reads books and complains about his life. Also, he gets angry, and sometimes kills people. But we feel sorry for him, and even like him a little. Shelly was inspired by early 18th century scientists who thought that newly discovered electricity could bring the inanimate to life. She raises interesting questions, such as, the nature of human beings and the meaning of morality. It's all so relevant to our time.

Nayab: I had never read Frankenstein before this so it was quite a shock to me (especially the length — it’s SO short!). This is a great story and a true gothic novel, but it also makes the reader question what gothic really means! Is science gothic, or just the supernatural? In this edition, the reader is also introduced to letters from Shelley herself + more contextual essays in relation of Frankenstein. This is a great edition for students who must work with Frankenstein (i.e. write an essay on it) as the contextual material helps a lot. Great read. When I have the time, I’ll probably re-read it! But first, I’d love to read the 1823 edition and see how much Shelley changed it after the death of her husband. Perhaps it’ll be more freeing...

Ana H: Great edition, excellent critical texts, a must for anyone who wants to go deep into the novel, its author and time, not only for scholars.

sushmita khan: If your college professor decides to give you a paper on this book get this book!!!! I mean this one not any other look for much cheaper value but this one specifically. It might be a little threatening to see all of those pages in such a big novel but trust me this is not that big the novel is only half of the book. At the back of this book there are a couple of essays to help you write whatever it is you need to write. If you are in need for a quick summary or anything like that you would love this book. Your professors would not mind you calling from any of these writers at the back of the book.

Mark Arnold: This second edition has value to the growing importance of Mary Shelley to the fields of feminist study, cultural communication, and literature. In addition to the original novel and critical essays, the editor has added recent material expanding upon present day examinations. While it is by no means the only book one needs for an adequate to understanding of this very young, and very talented woman, her life and background, it is the definitive text for the study of changes in critical commentary.
As a textbook for an undergraduate course, or a graduate level seminar, it is complete yet discussion provoking. As research material for writers and critics it gives an invaluable wealth of commentary.
It also happens to be an exception to the rule of college bookstores in two ways: the book is easily affordable and of value in inverse proportion to its cost.
