Comments

Chanjin: Probably my 20th time reading this book, and I love it still. I always like to follow the fairytale-esque nature of Pride and Prejudice with the more realistic Persuasion. Regardless, Jane austen managed to, like all the classical authors, capture the very human views/impressions and thought processes, and uniquely concludes all her books positively (which feeds my ever optimistic self). I do appreciate the lack of translations in this one. They are useful the second or third readthrough, but just slow it all down before and after that.

Astra Miller: Purchased as a present, beautiful books and a bit cheaper than when I saw them in the garden centre and also cheaper than from Chiltern books.

Jason Martin: Hands down the best English language novel. I defy you to prove otherwise or to fail to fall in love with its heroines. Or if you're a lady, its beaus, as all are exemplars of the best dispositions of their sex, and their happiness is to be wished without stipulation.

Amelia Le: I see why everyone wants a Mr.Darcy 🥹 now I want me one too. Though, he was kinda rude in the beginning 😆

Elizabeth is funny, & her father! ADORBS.

But in all honesty, this book made me feel dumb, the style of writing was so complex, I had a hard time with it. It took a really some time, and lots of rereading and dictionary to fully comprehend 😅😅

Time to go watch the movie again (2005 version)🩷

Angela M: How could you not give five stars to Austen's classics? If you have seen the movie, I'm impressed that it stuck with the plot of the book for the most part but, like most book adaptations, the movie doesn't do the book justice.

Jeyadarshini ShanmugamJeyadarshini Shanmugam: The book quality is great but I loved the previous matte finished cover. Even the book dimension has changed, which is completely different from the current preview Amazon shows. Idk why fingerprint publication has changed the cover styles for almost every classic books. Other than that, page quality, printing, font style and spacing hasn't changed a bit. Go for it, if you don't care about this cover style.

Eric: My impression is that it is a farce written for the pleasure of young women, with just enough politics and class distinctions to make it notable to critics, but represents nothing significant in terms of historical importance. Austen took advantage of the new medium of public print houses to distribute this shallow silliness, and nothing of this base level nature would have become famous previous to this development that made literature accessible to the untested, and therefore low, standards of the general populous of Britain.

Like a sitcom of modern television, the delivery of romantic drama depends entirely upon our connection to the characters: no one remembers the plot lines of individual “Friends” episodes so much as the attachments developed with the characters over time. The whole of Elizabeth, from whose viewpoint we experience the plot of “Pride and Prejudice”, is dull in comparison to the depth of characters created by Austen’s peers. Examples of superior characterization include those in early Gothic literature like Ann Radcliffe’s “The Mysteries of Udolpho” (1793) or in American literature like Hannah Webster Foster’s “The Coquette”...
