Keely B: I loved the idea.
But wanted it for my map obsessed kids (6 and 8).
Even as an adult, I wouldn't want to read that much text....I just want to explore super cool literary maps. So for us, it was a no go. Just too much text, not enough maps! But if you are looking for thick description, then this is for you. No doubt. It is a really beautiful book, thick, and lots of detailed descriptions.

The writer's map est un atlas des terres imaginaires nées sous la plume de grands auteurs, il comprend non seulement les cartes figurant réellement dans leurs livres, mais aussi les nombreuses cartes qui les ont inspirés et les croquis qu’ils ont utilisés pour rédiger leurs textes. Pour certains, créer une carte est un élément essentiel pour construire et raconter une histoire, "I wisely started with a map and made the story fit", a un jour dit Tolkien.
Ici des auteurs nous font part de leur processus et expériences illustrées par des cartes du monde telles qu'elles étaient envisagées à l'époque médiévale, ainsi que des cartes d'aventure, de SiFi et de Fantasy, des cartes issues de classiques littéraires, de BD etc...

Vintage Sedona: This book is enchanting! I love it!

I bought it for my son as he loves maps, geography, fantasy, history, imagination and the list goes on.

For avid readers of children's literature particularly fantasy and magic (Harry Potter, Narnia, LOTR, etc) the book has detailed black and white and color copies of all the popular maps plus more. I've already found one map The Land of Make Believe map which is so charming and would make a great addition to a child's room.

There are chapters from either the point of view of the author and how maps from other books impacted their imagination and writing as well as one from the illustrator that created the letters and Marauder's Map for the Harry Potter movies. The details of what was needed to create a magical letters map that was beyond the norm was fascinating.

This is one of those books that I want to give to each and every long-time fantasy reader and friend as it has so many old literary favorites as well as new ones you will want to explore.

I learned the US states from a puzzle map I was given at age 5, pored over a map of Europe on the cover of one of my third grade notebooks, and always jumped at the chance to read any book that featured maps of real or imagined lands on its end papers. When I had some free time I often doodled maps with elaborate coastlines and rugged mountain ranges. Dr. Huw Lewis-Jones must have had a childhood similar to mine, because in The Writer's Map he has produced a compendium calculated to delight everyone who has ever felt a tingle upon seeing the phrases "Here be dragons" or "Terra Incognita."
