ComfortCats: It comes with an LR41 battery. The LR41 is an alkaline battery and has limited shelf life.
If you want better battery performance order a 392 battery along for it. The 392 is identical size and silver-oxide chemistry which MUCH longer lasting in every respect. I have done this and it works.
The battery compartment (top cap) can be easily pulled open, but the battery is not easily removable. You would have to first pull the battery tray (which is basically the whole internals) approx. 3/8 of an inch (I was afraid to pull more for fear of possible damage). Then you can carefully persuade the battery put with a small screwdriver.
