Amazon Customer: If you’re new to rocks & minerals, this little (pocket size) book is well written and offers great color pictures for every rock and mineral type listed in the book. Although it’s touted as a ‘field guide,’ it’s also been a great ‘couch guide’ while looking at rocks gathered from our own backyard. It may not be comprehensive enough for the would-be geologist, but, for this newbie, it was a good purchase.

Jim: EXCACTLY perfect. This is so packed with info it is absolutely amazing. I cannot give it enough stars. The only thing I hope they add in the next printing would be a pronunciation key for words novices don't know, like gneiss and chalcedony. The pictures are thorough and show the natural state of the rock as you will seee it in the wild as well as polished. The map graphics are terrific. The value of this book FAR exceeds its price.

Todds Books: What this field book is: First an foremost, this field book covers 106 rocks and minerals found in Arizona. Secondly, it shows the general areas where they may be found. Very nice color photos on high quality glossy paper for each entry. Contains hardness, streak, size, color, how common the occurrence, and 2 or 3 paragraphs of notes for each specimen. At the beginning of the book, there is a "Quick Identification Guide" that will help a person find the specimen entry. In the back is a nice glossary and index, and a short bio on the authors. The book is sturdy in binding, and is 4" wide by 6" tall by 1/2" thick. It's 250 pages long. It's size and content are perfect for the amateur geologist's pack.
What this field book is NOT: it is not an encyclopedic treatise on each and every mineral on the planet in tiny detail (there are over 4000 species!). Nor is it some ponderous tome on geology. I have the Internet for that, and several books on geological topics.
Something else to consider: What is a field guide book for? My opinion is that it helps out in the field to decide if a specimen is worthy of taking home and investigating further. It does this by giving a general...
