rosa: This is the only reference guide you need for the island. I bought 2 other travel books before my trip along with this one. I read the other 2 and had no use for them. This is easy on the eyes and easy and fast to read. Very easy to find what you want. I also picked up every travel brochure at the Lihue airport on arrival. Read thru them and pitched all the same day. This book gas everything except coupons which is mainly what those airport brochures offer. I carried this book everyday. The maps are excellently detailed. The format almost serves as a daily itinerary of how to travel the island. It divides the island into 4 geographic areas and lays out the route to see sites without having to backtrack. Provides almost turn by turn directions & mile markers , tells you what you’ ll see as you approach your destination . ‘‘This book is like having a tour guide, provides just enough history & culture info to interest you. Small tour sites & businesses are mentioned not just the big concerns. Excellent info on all the beaches & safe walking trails. Becky: I've been fortunate enough to have traveled to Kauai many times over the last decade. From the very first time, whatever is the current edition of this book has been with me. I have a sentimental and grateful attachment to "Kauai Underground Guide" as it's added so much to each trip.
When I hear that a family member or acquaintance is visitng Kauai for the first time, I order this book as a gift, knowing that it will add immensely to the enjoyment and discovery of their first journey to the "Garden Isle."
Yes, there are other Kauai guidebooks--more every year, it seems. There is even one that's supposedly the "Bible." But THIS is by far my favorite..and I've tried them all. Why? Lenore's sincere love of the island is so evident! She's not out to write anything sarcastic or negative, instead focusing on the many wonderful beaches, restaurants, shops, sites , and ideas for a full days' activities that she and her family enjoy, explaining in detail what makes them special. I love her ideas for how to spend special days in different parts of the island.

G. M. Matthews: I purchased a number of books before going to Kauai. There are only 2 that I can highly recommend of them all. This is one. Kauai Revealed is the other. Both, in the end, are probably required to really plan and enjoy a trip on your own.

What Lenore's book gives you is a personal, up-front view of where to eat, great beaches to explore, and other things to do that are in the realm of the day-to-day things you will just do. Eat. Walk on the beach. Swim. Shop. Also, this book is a lot more family oriented than Revealed, so if you have children, there's a ton of great family focus here. I don't have kids, so obviously it is great either way. Maybe your're going to Kauai to have a great Na Pali cruise or some other vacation-oriented activity. Revealed has probably more focus on those kinds of things, although this book gave a great perspective in those areas, too. But those major activities I planned before the trip, made decisions on which companies to hire, and made reservations before we left. When we were there, and needed advice on what to do to fill in the rest of the time (which is most of the time if you're there more than a couple of days (8 for us)), Kauai Underground...

emme: We were referred to this book by the people from whom we rented our condo in Hawaii. We found it very informative and family oriented. We purchased another book at the same time which we found was better suited to our active, no children life style: Kauai Revealed. We would recommend buying both. They complement each other nicely.In addition, we really enjoyed the free music CD. We have many CDs of Hawaiian music and this is a nice supplement.One word of warning though, after you read the book, you will be ready to jump on a plane right this moment! Alooooha!!
