Explore Kauai: The Best Trails, Snorkeling, Biking, Paddling, and Surfing Spots

Melissa Simpson: I bought 2 guides for Kauai and returned this one. I was hoping it would be better than a mainstream guide to provide better info on hiking. I didn't like the way info was organized in this, it wasn't something that you could just pick up and go to what you were looking for, and the maps weren't useful. It was very wordy, but the wordiness wasn't helpful. I returned it because it didn't meet my needs. It did have good auto tour descriptions for those looking to plan a few day trip where you want to spend your time driving to sightsee and stop in the towns. But for activities like hiking, snorkeling, and going to beaches, this wasn't a helpful guidebook. It read more like a novel. And for Kauai, color pictures would have been better to help the book than poor quality black and white pics printed on thin paper.

GrizzledAtoms: Very good book on the trails on Kauai. I found it to be a great resource for our most recent trip to the island, wanting to do several hikes while we were there. Some folks don't like that it doesn't have color pictures throughout but that didn't bother me a bit. The information is much more important to me than pictures.

A few years later we decided to go back and do everything we had missed on our first trip. This book was the perfect buy for our trip. We used this book in conjunction with, "The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook: Kauai Revealed" These books helped us plan our entire trip down to the last detail. We were able to do more things and take advantage of what Kauai had to offer that we may have otherwise not known about without this book. The book gave us detailed directions to destinations they talked about in the book. We were able to visit several beaches it talked about and choose ideal snorkeling locations. It warned us of dangerous terrain and locations depending of the seasons.We were able to go on several hikes and explore hidden gems. I loved reading this book and learning more about Kauai and the culture and what this beautiful island has to offer. This book is a must for anyone traveling to Kauai.

ktoypete: Having never been to the Hawaiian islands, we found this book an excellent tool to plan day long or shorter excursions. The format of maps, trails and guides by region was very helpful. The description of the trails we hiked were very accurate and was information not easily accumulated from other sources. The paddle routes were well described and and easy to find. I recommend this as a pocket guide and planning tool for your trip to Kauai.

Mountain Bird: Excellent and thorough book about adventure in Kauai. It's amazing that for such a small island there are a plethora of things to do and see. I read the entire book before I left for Hawai'i and felt marginally intimidated by the specificity the authors spent on directions, but found, when I arrived, that there was nothing to worry about. It's an easy island to navigate. Great book. The authors are locals and give you thorough disclosure about everything from hiking, biking, kayaking and surfing to restaurants and B&Bs. It's my first choice for any Hawaiian guide.
