Kenna M.: Has lots & lots of great information. Learned a ton from reading the book, even as someone who has a dairy background.

Tom G.: This book has been a tremendous help to me. The wisdom in this book is easily assimilated, as it is written in layman's terms, well illustrated, and very practical. I have purchased several copies over the years and have given them to my friends who are cattlemen. Her other book, The Cattle Health Handbook, is also very helpful and practical, and when I have a problem with my cattle, these are the first books I turn to. I know the things I've learned from these books have helped me save the lives of numerous calves. Highly, highly recommended!

P. SimeoneP. Simeone: Several months ago a bull broke into my fathers cow pen. Everyone suspected, but wasn't sure. I bought this book as a joke or a lesson that it wouldnt be so easy to have cows around. Then last weekend, mama cow was showing signs of being in labor. We rushed to find the book and within 15 minutes we were able to feel very comfortable with her current situation, and to know if we needed to get involved. Of course nature will take place, but it was reassuring to know what to expect. We continued to read and it helped with many things. Recognizing that we should get a bottle and feed him while the mother was still having some minor issues. The heat was a factor and she sort of abandoned the calf high in the field with no protection. And also to recognize minor issues with his knees. In the end, "Norman" is doing great and his book certainly helped.

The Rancher's Wife: I get a few bottle babies every year. Mostly they are given to me by another rancher who doesn't want to bother as they are sick or abandoned for one reason or another. Usually it's one of the common things babies get and we are able to rehydrate, thaw, or treat them and they survive. This year I had an odd case and decided to check this book out to see if it has the solution. It didn't but it is an incredibly thorough book, as are all of them from this Author, and I was surprised my question wasn't answered. This is an essential guide for anyone who is thinking of raising cattle. I would highly recommend it.

Zangoose: After being taught how to calve cows, being put in charge of calf rearing with agricultural college just around the corner, I felt a bit of extra reading couldn't hurt, so I bought this book. I am incredibly pleased with this purchase, this book is very detailed about every aspect of calving you could think of, it also details about the raising of calves and lists some common problems and illnesses that can occur with a young calve or during a calving. You can also tell it's written from personal experience, by people that genuinely care for their cattle, so everything written in it also has husbandry in mind. An excellent book, for a novice to farming to a veteran it is an interesting, informative and rather enjoyable read.

Mary J. Phifer: IF you have pregnant cows or heifers you will be having calves. Isn't that the idea? Cows can be intimidating (even with our wee Irish Dexters) and you might think "they know what to do" but sometimes they need help. This book is excellent in helping you learn what is normal and what is not, what might go wrong and importantly- when to call for help.

Being a nurse-midwife, I have delivered 2-legged babes, but calving is new to me. It is easy to ask a person "do you feel pressure?" Try getting an answer from a cow... This book is wonderful at explaining the basics of bovine prenatal care, labor management and postpartum care. Keeping your cow healthy and having a healthy calf- these are the goals and both are met within the pages.

Even if you are a life-long cattleperson, this book will teach you something. It has to; it covers areas that the Thomas' have seen over their careers and some are pretty bizarre. Pictures and stories are heartwarming and informative. This book will give you the knowledge and confidence to help your calves and momma cows do great.
