Michael Ronayne: I recently upgraded my old Windows-7 laptop to the “free” Windows-10 promotional offered from Microsoft. Even under Windows-7 the WiFi interface had been problematic and the issued continued under Windows-10. Given the advanced age of the laptop, I didn’t want to invest a lot of money fixing the WiFi. In reviewing Amazon’s USB WiFi solutions, the Edimax EW-7811Un appeared to be likely low cost solution were it not for the large number of negative reviews which were offset by the still larger number of positive review. I decided to take a chance and ordered the Edimax EW-7811Un.

When the Edimax EW-7811Un arrived, I was able to use the default Windows-10 and Mini CD-ROM to install the driver and support software; however, neither solution worked for longer than several minutes before failing. Most troubling was that the Edimax EW-7811Un “ALMOST” worked.

When I read the current product reviews, as they pertain to Windows-10, I realized that my experience was not unique and there were a number of unhappy people who ordered the Edimax EW-7811Un for use with Windows-10. In reviewing several USB WiFi solutions on Amazon, I noticed that the...

i_kko: Plugged this into a Raspberry Pi 2 running Raspbian and it works straight off. Ok not quite straight off, after all we are dealing with Linux here so some inevitable "sudo..." mumble has to follow, in my case to stop the dongle going to sleep after periods of inactivity.

was all that was required to achieve wifi happiness. And that's it!

LeliBug: I've had this a while now and think it's pretty great.

Used for an older tower PC (Windows 7) that had no wifi card, a Raspberry Pi (B+) and an old Samsung netbook (running Linux distro Fedora), this dongle has kept a consistent wifi connection, was plug'n'play with all the operating systems, and required no extra fiddling with that I had originally expected to possibly encounter using Linux-based systems.

It's pretty sturdy too, has taken a few knocks with the netbook, and despite a small crack, soldiers on without pause and did not break, nor did it affect the inside. I am therefore very impressed with this little thing!

Carl Crawford: I tried for days to get this configured. Here is so much conflicting information out there. Finally I found a script to automatically install it. Here are the instructions:

Installing your rtl8188cus wireless adapter:
--------------------------------------------

If you are installing your first wifi adapter or adding a new wifi adapter to a Pi that
already has a different one installed the driver should be installed BEFORE plugging in the
new wifi adapter.

DO NOT PLUG IN THE WIFI ADAPTER UNTIL ASKED TO - LOOK AT THE SCREEN OUTPUT FOR INSTRUCTIONS.

So connect up your Pi then power on and wait for it to boot and initialise. Log in and then
you can start to install the software/firmware for the wifi adapter.

Some images need configuring when they are first run so go through the configuration before
running the sript. After the image is configured you can start the script to install the wifi.

If you have an internet connection to your Pi you can now download the script. Use the
command:

sudo wget http://dl.dropbox.com/u/80256631/install-rtl8188cus-latest.sh -O...

Andy G: Having tried a few cheap and nasty nano usb wifi adapters that claim to be n speeds and are nowhere close, the edimax adapter is absolutely spot on. Bought originally for the raspberry pi (works perfect in raspbmc) i went on to buy 2 more of these for other desktop pc's in the house. The signal on the nano adapters isn't quite as good as a big bulky adapter but is pretty amazing never the less. Highly recommended product.
