Rabbi Yonason Herschlag: The Atkins diet consists of four phases:
Phase 1: (2 weeks or longer)—Induction: This two week phase (can be longer) involves fast weight loss via minimal carbohydrate intake (no more than twenty grams, primarily from salad greens). Lack of fiber can be compensated for with a tablespoon of psyllium husks, ground flaxseed or wheat bran.
Phase 2: Ongoing Weight Loss: This phase moves to a slower weight-loss plan, via a slightly normalized carbohydrate intake. Each week, daily carbohydrate intake is increased by five grams until the individual reaches the “critical carbohydrate level for losing.” This level is discovered when weight loss stops, at which point carbohydrate intake is reduced to a level where ongoing weight loss can continue.
Phase 3: Premaintenance: Carbohydrate levels are increased again, however, at this stage, when the dieter is within five to ten pounds of his or her target weight, the objective is to lose these last pounds slowly, at a rate of only one pound per week. The reason for this phase is to “train” for the final Lifetime Maintenance phase. During this phase, dieters learn how to restrict themselves to maintain a healthy weight.
Phase...

Kate and Loren: Everywhere you look in the media there is an article or photograph of some celebrity or other who is deemed to be overweight or has gone on the latest fad diet. So many of the diets come in an out of fashion as quickly as you can make a cup of tea. However the Atkins diet is one that has consistently been there in the background. Occasionally coming to the front and gaining some media attention, but more often than not just quietly going about it's business. It's worth noting that the Atkins diet presented to us in this book has some significant differences to the original book released towards the back end of the 20th Century. Dr Atkins himself openly admits that he got some things wrong last time....how refreshing for a change!!

Very early on in this book you are introduced to a concept which you would do well to bear in mind throughout; This approach to food isn't designed to be just a fad diet that you do in order to lose weight. It's designed to alter your approach to and relationship with so that you make a lifestyle change for good. It takes a little while to get your head round it, but I promise you that it will make things significantly easier once you let it sink...

rational-karlh: This diet works.

I had success on it several years ago, and I have to admit that I didn't feel bad (like some people), and I loved eating all that meat.

Atkin's theory about insulin control seems to be semi-valid, but you don't have to have a high animal-food diet to control that. Not all carbohydrates are the same. Some are the ones our bodies have evolved to live on, others are just highly processed versions of the former. It's the highly processed carbs that are the problem, and not ALL carbs. In particular sugar. This seems to drive appetite. If I eat sugar I just want to eat more and more. Salt on food has a similar effect. Whereas if I eat porridge oats, I feel full for ages(assuming I haven't added sugar). If I eat meat , eggs, nuts I also feel full for ages. If I eat some confectionary, or have a sugar ladden junk food ( quite often in the bread too ) I do not feel full for that long.

If all you want to do is lose weight and not go into much details as to why it works, then Atkin's might be for you. These days I think the Paleo diet is a whole lot more sensible on many aspects, the main one being it has way more fibre so you will not get...

E: What Dr. Atkins writes about does make so much sense - all the experts say don't eat so much fat, but what about carbs?? He is right, carbs are an addiction. That lightheadedness you may feel - hello? can we say withdrawl symptoms?? I didn't realize how much I craved them till my husband and I tried the diet. It was working as promised - 4 days I lost 4 pounds, I was hardly tired but the first phase called Induction where you basically start with at most 20g of carbs a day was really hard.
No, you don't starve on this diet despite what some have said (I think it's because some readers didn't read the whole book before going on the diet). You can have meat, eggs, cheese, veggies (only certain ones at the beginning mind you) among other things along with drinking plenty of water and taking vitamins. After about 4 days I had to stop - I wasn't sick or anything, just tired of the same set of food over and over. Not having toast with my eggs and bacon was driving me nuts! The salad was fine but I couldn't have my favorite dressing cause it had too many carbs in it. To those that have gotten through this diet I applaud you - how one can give up as many carbs as one does in the...
