Transform your life and achieve your weight-loss goals with New Atkins for a New You: The Ultimate Diet for Shedding Weight and Feeling Great. Written by renowned nutrition expert Stephen D. Phinney, this is one of the best Atkins diet Books available, offering unparalleled value for money, ease of understanding, and an enjoyable read. Make the change today and start living the life you want. John Hope: I write this from the viewpoint of a type 2 diabetic. The Atkins diet worked well for me 12 years ago and I lost weight, my blood sugar stabilized to near normal values, and my cholesterol actually went down.
The New Atkins is very similar to the original Atkins, the main exception being that in the new version proteins are limited to recommended quantities and you can't blissfully gorge yourself on steaks and duck to the same extent as you did in Old Atkins.
This time I have again lost a great deal of weight, again my blood sugar is again nearly in the normal range, but now my cholesterol has skyrocketed to 8.5. WTF! This after eating the same foods I ate on the first pass of the diet 12 years ago - so do bodies change over time in this respect? Does the progression of diabetes affect the cholesterol metabolism? While not a disciple of the Great Cholesterol Lowering Purge as advocated by the NHS and other institutions, I must draw the line somewhere and 8.5 is well into red line of hypercholestol.
One can expect severe energy shortages during phase 1 - especially during physical exercise - but the recommended multivit, CoQ10 and Omega oil supplements seem to offset this...

Gerald Maffeo: This book, along with Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living (Drs Phinney and Volek) have changed both my wife's and my life. Having been a butterball since a baby for most of my life, I have tried many diets and have taken off - and put back on - well over a hundred kilos.
Two years ago, we both realized we had to change our lifestyles in order to achieve lasting results. Although a confirmed carboholic, I decided to give Atkins a try - and haven't looked back since. I've dropped over 20 kg and nearly 25 cm from my waist - and kept them off! Our energy levels are (and were throughout the programme) excellent.
My health is markedly improved - good cholesterol (which was always dismal) is dramatically improved and triglycerides are great. My blood pressure is substantially better and I've been able to eliminate my blood pressure meds.
The low-carb living book explains why (based on extensive research) conventional wisdom is absolutely incorrect - especially misinformation around dietary fats. The book is hard to get and for some reason very expensive in Canada, but very worthwhile reading if you can get it.)
For those who love their carbs (which we...

Shannon E C: OK, here's the deal for me. In September I realized I needed to lose around 50 pounds. I went for the low-fat, whole grain, portion control approach; and stuck to it pretty well. In more than seven months I lost 17 pounds and was miserable and frustrated the entire time. In less than two weeks on Atkins, I have lost 8 pounds, and have never felt deprived!
I am in a situation where I end up eating out a lot. With my other diet, this just made me feel more frustrated. But on this plan, I feel like I can stick with it anywhere. If I'm in a high end place, it's all about the meat/fish and veggies anyway. And if it's a burger joint, I just skip the bun and the fries! The sodium doesn't seem to be an issue, surprisingly.
For breakfast I have been making 2 egg omlettes with frozen veggies and cheese. Lunch is usually tuna or chicken salad on a bunch of greens/veggies. Dinner is some kind of grilled or broiled meet with asparagus etc. (I throw on some rice pilaf etc. for the rest of the family). I went to Whole Foods today and saw the "prepared foods" section with a whole new eye! I didn't even want to stare at the pizza!
One of the things that appealed to me most was...

Mr. S. Mcmurray: If you are looking to lose weight, this plan works.......unfortunately if you are like me then the reason for wanting to lose weight is simply a question of discipline.....and I hate discipline. However, for me this book is an eye opener to just how much starchy carb loaded food (which I love!!) affects my weight. This book will show you how to reduce carbs, and on the induction phase pretty much eliminate them, this in turn will lead to fairly rapid weight loss....but by far the most agreeable fact for me is that after 6-7 days a higher protein diet eliminates my appetite so I'm not left feeling like I want to eat my right arm to get through the day. But as with all diets I am forced to consider that it is not rocket science.....for me fewer carb rich foods..more excercise and I will inevitably head toward a more desirable weight........Am I happy about that?? Not at all. If you have not tried this method, I would recommend the book, but read the theory behind it!!! The onlypeople who "knock" atkins.......usually have never tried it...so far I have lost 32lbs and importantly am not at all hungry....I have yet to stump up the courage to start regular excercise....give it a go,...

CMCM: I'm 60, and have a lifetime of digestive woes behind me. I got to a point where I thought virtually NO food out there would agree with me. I was slim until my second child at 36, and carried an excess 20-30 lbs. after that. I was unsuccessful with every diet I tried. In 2003 I tried Atkins for the very first time. It was effortless, the weight dropped off quite easily, and best of all, I felt physically better than I had ever felt in my entire life. My digestive issues disappeared, headaches disappeared, I felt fantastic. How could that be?
A few years later I learned I have celiac disease, meaning my time on Atkins without gluten benefitted me enormously. In the years since 2003 I've learned a lot about my body and what works to fuel it. I am highly carb sensitive, and in addition to not being able to eat gluten, I also do not do well with any other grains, starches, and I have to limit even fruit since I just can't handle much sugar. At my current age it is hard to lose weight, but I've been back on a basic Atkins diet since March 1 and have slowly but surely dropped about 15 pounds and a lot of fat in the middle. I feel wonderful, my blood pressure is down, and I expect...

pgnutritionist: A marvellous book that explains which foods are better included for any diet. I have purchased this book for myself, family and friends so that they can understand why certain foods are better to eat. It is written by four doctors involved in obesity studies and provides excellent advice based on human physiology.
