C. Alea: And those pants have gotten loser. I don't think I've ever responded to a book the way I did to this one. The first few chapters is very science concentrated, but as the chapters progress the science makes sense. As I read the book, I realized I was already doing about 70% of her recommendations, but by reading more of her tips, it totally motivated me to make the final changes. What are those changes: absolutely no processed food and as little sugar as possible. I miss none of it. I added probiotics and I no longer eat anything that has a food label on it. Everything I buy is fresh and I either eat it fresh (hello mid-morning veggie snacks) or I cook it from fresh food. The only thing that I haven't been able to achieve yet, is a consistent exercise routine, but that's only because life is too chaotic. That is the final piece of the puzzle. The results? I've dropped a few pounds without even trying and yes, my skin looks great, but it was pretty good before this. I am on my second month of making these changes and love how I feel.

LAC: I have been anticipating this book for quite some time; Dr Bowe is easily the best qualified physician in North America to tackle the subject of healthy skin. A practicing dermatologist and research-publishing scientist, Dr Bowe translates complex topics and illuminates them in east-to-understand ways. The real-life cases from her clinical practice make it easy to see how diet, stress, lifestyle etc manifest in skin health (or disease). Given the title, there is extensive discussion of the emerging microbiome science and the ways in which microbes can mediate skin health. Refreshingly, this science isn't oversold in the book. There are plenty of practical solutions but Dr Bowe knows full well how complicated skin conditions can be, and each person's environment, genetics, resources and lifestyle might manifest in the skin in different ways. So, it's a good balance of research-based information, hope for future microbiome-based solutions, and steps to take in the here-and-now.
Beautifully written by a pioneer who dismantled the dogma which stated there was NO relationship between diet and acne. There are still lots of research questions on that score, and Dr Bowe refrains from...

Joe Jonson: There is a lot of information out there on skin care, but I really appreciated how this book connects the dots between food, lifestyle and skin. I always figured that skin issues were caused by too much oil or bad genes. This book goes deep into the science of how the skin as an organ functions.
Of course your organs are connected to and controlled by your brain, but learning how to control the inputs of your brain through lifestyle choices which indirectly controls your skin was profound.
Call be old fashioned, but I like the weight and feel of a physical book. I'm sure the kindle and ebook is great, but the hardcover book looks and reads excellent.
Bottom line: Buy a copy for yourself, and few extra to give away to friends.
