Avid Reader: This book is a must read for Protestant or Catholic alike. One can see in the early church fathers the practices and traditions the Catholic Church continues to this day, and how it was begun early in the life of the church. As a life long Protestant before coming into full communion with the Catholic Church, the early church fathers are not discussed, preached about, or the details of their life and writings not shared in Protestant circles. If they were, they would have to admit the error of their ways in following Martin Luther and the founders of Protestantism starting nearly a thousand years AFTER the early church fathers, in 1517.

Amazon Customer: When the Church was young is a very readable book. The chapters are succinct and well structured. It reads very smoothly. I found the historical synopses of the author very interesting and well articulated, understandable but also parochial. The author is Catholic and follows the dogma of this church. Some of his well-articulated views are simply unsupported Roman church dogma. I am not saying this to try to pick a fight. Marcellino repeats Roman church positions in the course of his reflections on history and these are not problematic if the reader understands where they come from and understands that they are not all commonly agreed with. But for the uninformed, they are misleading and logic leaps that will not further the persons education. Lastly, this books suffers, as most church history texts do. The author can only laud the decisions of the past and the people that made them in spite of where these decisions lead to or how they, in spite of the best of intentions, create significant damage a generation or two later. Helen: This gives a great overview of the church fathers. It gives information about their main theological beliefs/arguments and gives you context too with the brief biographical accounts of each of them. This has been a fantastic introduction and I'd highly recommend it.

This was how Dr. D'Ambrosio began his talk many years ago when I attended a lecture he gave on Early Church Fathers. Over the next hour, he regaled us with stories of our Catholic family, and anecdotes about our forefathers in faith.
