Bethday: I have read and re-read this many, many times over the years. I would highly recommend it to anyone and, in fact, have just given it to my granddaughter to read.

Nicole: When I first saw the book cover, I actually “fell” for the book because of the dog on the cover. I love dogs and the cover really spoke to my heart. How could I pass up a book about a dog! My hesitation – that it was written by Dean Koontz. I thought I was well aware of Koontz's reputation, but I will reserve the answer until the end of my review.

I am now in my eighties and have always read books en masse! I have orders to bury all my books with me when I die – just joshing of course! Reading has been a great love in my life. I always have my “next book” ready before I finish the current book. This book I truly hesitated because of the author. Do I have anything against Dean Koontz: don't know him but do know the type of books that he writes – or at least, as I said, I thought I did. As I grew older, I became much more selective in my reading. Things that never bothered me before in life, now do bother me. I simply don't read books that contain terror in any form. By terror, I am not talking about furballs but I am talking about the two-legged kind of animals. I don't want this type of garbage to enter my mind. Unfortunately there is enough in the daily news...

Peter Holsworth: I've read alot of books but watchers is still one of the best. I've read this 3 times now and still I gripped in it. I still feel saddened when I know I'm getting to the end of this absolutely fantastic tale.

Lora S.: A pair of experimental animals created for the military in a secret genetic engineering lab. A pair of lonely young people looking for meaning in their lives. A pair of law enforcement officers trying to solve some very strange murders. And a pair of criminal types who appear to have nothing to do with any of this or with each other. These are the main elements of the unusual drama that is Watchers.

There is nothing supernatural about any of this – well if you don’t count the hired killer who is convinced he absorbs the life force of the people he kills – but it would be difficult to tell that from the first part of the book.

Travis Cornell, depressed and possibly suicidal, goes hiking in the mountains where he meets up with what appears to be a dog. The dog prevents him from heading down a path into the darkest part of the woods where he senses the presence of a hidden evil. Noises of some kind of painful conflict convince Travis that the dog had the right idea. He takes the dog home with him. The dog immediately displays signs of unusual intelligence. Except that sometimes he just acts like a normal dog.

A couple of weeks later, they are walking in a...

Straightforward: Let me quickly tell you where I was coming from when I started reading this book: I had finally, after catching the bug a few years before, finished all of Stephen King's books; I'd even started buying them in hardback as soon as they came out (something I swore that I wouldn't do once upon a time). I wondered at one point whether King's legendary production speed would mean that he could possibly write them quicker than I could read them, but alas, this wasn't to be.

So - what next? It's a huge pair of shoes to fill, and I really didn't know where to start. I like a lot of different genres, but SK does the horror/suspense thing so well that I wanted to get straight back into it. After browsing around for a bit, it seemed like Dean was the obvious candidate, the next reading fix for me.

I was hesitant though. I'd tried to read one of his books before whilst I was in a hospital waiting room (it was the only publication there that wasn't a magazine), and I didn't get on with it very well. Eventually it was all the 5-star reviews here that persuaded me to overcome my reticence.

To be fair to Dean, you could probably count the number of writers on one hand that...
