Andrew C. Piazza's "One Last Gasp": A Gripping Tale of Love and Loss

Joshua Pritchett Jr: One Last Gasp is a great horror story that's filled with interesting facts about the lives of GIs in World War 2. Piazza weaves an excellent tale that's hard to put down once you start reading.

Laura Rose: I read horror, but I've never read a war story novel. I never thought I'd have the patience to read battle scenes. But Piazza's pacing and vivid vocabulary, his clearly extensive research preparation, and his ability to make action scenes personal made this read like watching an exciting movie. I feel like I really connected and was able to understand and honor the WWII GI experience. And the horror is clever and top notch. Thank you for the page turner! I won't forget it.

Steven Beltzer: This was a frightening read just from the scenes that had to do with the battles within the war! Then, this guy tosses these soldiers into an extremely creepy supernatural, cosmic horror type situation. Between this title and the few short stories I've read by Piazza, I highly recommend this title and anything else by him!

Dustin Higgins: I took a chance and was not disappointed. All I wanted was some cheesy cosmic horror but, as a vet, I got a story of brotherhood and a brief glimpse that humanity is capable of stopping great evils when we can stop committing evils against one another.

While the book may never be spoken of in the same category of WW2 novels suck as Catch-22 or The Naked and the Dead, don't sell this story short: it's damn good!

Amazon Customer: At first I was a bit skeptical of the first 50 pages or so. I realized it was a very long book (500 Something pages) and wasn’t sure how much more effort I wanted to put in. As much as I love war related materials, I wanted the horror aspect to show up already.

Well I’m glad I held on because after a handful of pages I was intrigued…and then it kept getting better.

This is most definitely a horror book. It’s a mix of human created horror and something of the paranormal. If you love military/war themed stories, you will love this. If you like horror, then you will also love this.

It took me 2 days to get through this book while I was on vacation and I don’t regret it one bit.

…lastly…you may find yourself tearing up in the end here and there. As much as this is a war inspired horror novel, there was so much emotion.

I think I will be looking for more from this author…

Curly D: I bought this for a gripping read whilst on my hols. There’s surprising depth here in both the knowledge of world war 2 troops day to day lives and character development. You’ll root for the heroes. It’s refreshing to read an action packed book that has depth in its characters. And surprising to see the man-made horrors of the war elevated to new heights by the introduction of fantastical horror elements, both in the nazi bad guys and the horror that awaits them further down the line.
Birdsong this ain’t, but if you want fun, edge of your seat action in a war setting and like gore, horror and good characters, then give this a go. A great holiday read and have bought others by the same author and enjoyed them. Why not give it a shot (if your gun doesn’t jam?)

Sammy.: What a fabulous book. The descriptions were so realistic it felt like I was actually there. Not my usual choice of reading material but am so glad I bought this. Will take a long time to get it out of my head. The characters were realistic and likeable I was praying they'd get through.

JoeJoe: I enjoy reading WWII (non-fict + fiction) as well as the occasional thriller. This book was an amazing read with gritty combat thrills, psychological twists and turns as well as making you question multidimensional realities, what could be or not be. I would definitely recommend this if you like WWII or horrors/thrillers, it’s a must!

Pete Y.: ...The author said it himself. He does nothing to downplay his adoration of his mentor and inspiration and you can feel the influence of At The Mountains Of Madness here, but it’s used cunningly and creatively, as a flavour, as an unspoken given, almost. Big shoes to fill, indeed, but the author is up to the task. An incredible job of juggling WWII action, outright horror (seriously, enough stuff here to make the strongest to blow their chunks) and a real, foreboding sense of eldritch horror. Full of shocks, suspense, some really nasty twists, brilliant characterisation and a truly dreadful cliffhanger ending. Be thankful for the lighter nights because, I can guarantee, you won’t want to put this down. If you wake up, in the middle of the night, and all the angles in the room seem to be off-kilter and subtly wrong, and you can hear the faint click-click-click of claws on floor covering, and there appear to be two Moons in the pitchy, night sky...then I suggest that you pull up the covers and pray that sleep possesses you. Because if sleep doesn’t, THEY will. Brilliant!

DAVID BRYSON: This writer can spin a good story. Just on its own the theme was attractive enough to sell me the book from new, because the theme seemed to resemble that of The Keep by F Paul Wilson. The setting was an impenetrable forest and the date of the action was 1944 or 1945. The forest harboured a Large Nasty in a large remote castle or such like, and the advancing Allied troops were on their way to deal with it. Very promising for those who like that sort of thing, but alas The Keep did not keep its promise, and the latter half of that book (and of its TV transfer) was pretty deplorable.

So I read eagerly. This author was master of his craft, and his account of the tank battles with the SS held my attention in a way such a narrative would not normally do. There was a lot of it, but even when the heroes reached the sinister Dom Caern it was taking a long time to locate the Geist, the Lovecraftian (or worse) fiend that awaited them. I was starting to experience a twinge of restiveness at that, and sure enough after the release of the Geist there is another long sequence of tank warfare that was very much like the earlier one.
