The Daiwa BG2500 BG Saltwater Spinning Reel is an ideal choice for anglers looking for a reliable, high-quality reel. It features a 5.6:1 gear ratio, 6+1 bearings, 33.20" retrieve rate, and 13.20 lb max drag. The black and gold color scheme gives it an eye-catching look, while its machined aluminum body and body cover provide strength and internal part stability. The reel also features a screw-in-handle design that provides zero movements or play between the main gear and handle arm, and an oversized gear that helps to increase gear-tooth contact points.A. Parker: Very smooth action and gearing. I bought after reading highest reviews for what’s in the market, and it’s right. I’d buy the next size up though for freshwater fishing with a 7’ rod. This is way too small for any saltwater.

April: First let me say that I have been using the bg series reels exclusively on my fishing charters for around 5 years. The reels get a ton of use and stand up well. There are a few recurring issues that I have noticed and what bothers me is Daiwa's lack up support/customer service.
The two major issues I have are the threading on the left side of reel (typical right handed fisherman) is shallow and stripes out. To replace the part you have to purchase the entire pinion and drive unit assembly which costs $40 plus shipping. To much for a $100 reel. I will say that as a guide Im sure I swap handle sides over much more then a recreational fisherman would so keep that in mind. I am sure this adds to the issue. The other issues is the female thread on a few handles has also striped out. I now have 6 2500 size reels sitting in a box unusable because of this. What's stinks is the threading itself is removable but daiwa does not offer this part for sale.
Just an honest heads up. Especially to guides or people that may have lefties at home and swapping handle sides is a necessity.

Customer: Bought this reel for a 9 ft crappie rod. A little overkill, but like a larger reel. Went through a season of moderate use with no issues. Plenty of line capacity for it's purpose. Was overly impressed when a muskie decided he wanted my crappie more than I did. The drag was put to the test for about 10 minutes before broke the flurocarbon leader off at the boat. Needless to say the reel performed like a champ to get the big beast that far on a noodle rod with 6 lb test. Needed another reel for a new rod this spring and bought another of these. Don't think that there's a reel that's more bang for the buck out there. For toughness or fishability, this is the one.

andrew ellingenandrew ellingen: I suppose ordinarily, customarily, it would be prudent to wait to review a product until after you've really had a chance to use (and abuse) it. However, I got this reel in the mail today and got to using it nearly immediately. Now granted, I'm really not a huge gear head (the last reel/rod combo I bought was in 2005) but this is the nicest reel I've ever used. It has such a smooth, easy cast and a really nice drag with it that I'm just over the moon. No regrets whatsoever about this purchase. I would imagine that there's honestly better equipment out there - deals to be had, more bearings, less weight etc, but this reel fell just under $100. Not by much, but ce'est la vie, it feels like a steal at that price, it really does. I went freshwater fishing today in a large river and I caught nothing on it, as a caveat, but it didn't hardly seem to matter because all the other important dynamics were there as previously mentioned. One final note: while it's a bit vain and a little silly, this reel also just looks really nice. Once you open the box, you kind of get enough of a different perspective than the Amazon pics to kind of understand, it just looks nice. Solid reel, don't think...

Philippe: If you get on the web, start searching, you will think you will need a BG reel and a Ugly stick. These companies invest so much in web reviews, SEO, product placement, you will get hooked just a like a fish! These companies know all about lures!!!
BG still seemed likes a good deal. I bought a BG2500 as an all around reel.
Very good product for the money, but don't think you're getting $200 worth out of a $100 reel. If your read that this is as good as $200+ dollars japanese reel, that the BG is going to be the only reel left on the market because they are so good... know that is online marketing. You are getting the best value for your money, but nothing more.
They invent word like "digi gear". Trust me all reel are made using CNC machined gears, otherwise the cost of craftsmanship would be just too much.
It is made in China, and in this category, consider Penn Battle 2 also, as it has sealed bearings, as opposed to "shielded bearing", and is cheaper than the BG.

Slimmetry: This reel is so much fun to use and a beast for durability.
Since Daiwa announced the updated versions of the classic Black-Gold reels, I've been itching to pick up one and take it on the water. I finally got my chance when Amazon stocked it, so I didn't hesitate. Price was fair and came in cheaper than the larger outdoors stores, so that's a positive.
At the moment, I've got this reel paired with a Fenwick HMX 6'6" XF rod and using Sufix 832 Braid. The combination is well balanced and lightweight. The only tip I can provide is to NOT overload this reel. For my purposes, I know I can't cast 200 yards, so I'm not going to unnecessarily overload the reel. If you do, you'll enjoy a lot of tangles, and that's just not a lot of fun.
Build quality feels solid all-around and after 100+ hours on the water so far, doesn't show any weak points or signs of wear. I've checked the reel arm, the spool and all moving joints - I'm pleased to say it still looks brand new.
Casting is very smooth with the only faults being the occasional user-error where I've overshot my target - but that has nothing to do with the reel. The retrieve is also silky-smooth with a very...

G. Ferguson: After a couple years of frustration with Penn Battle 3 combos, I switched to Daiwa with no regrets. Paired the BG2500 with a Daiwa Proteus 66MXS for what I feel is a perfect inshore setup. I understand it’s not an apples-apples comparison with the Battle III, but as much as I fish it’s money well spent in my opinion.
