N. McArthur: Some guitars and some songs sound great with string squeak. Many don't . And the jazz tones that come from flat wound strings just don't cut it for me. These give that smooth feel, but keep the 'bite' for when the tubes get hot.

Using them on an 80's Gibson LP with 490s and a 60's Tele stock. They still sound like round wound, but the slide (and aging fingers) don't scratch and squeak.

R Cagno: I have used these strings for some time now and like how they perform. Some don't like the "half round" sound as they tend to not be as bright as "round wound". I do like them. I use them on 335 semi hollow body clone and like the tone that they bring. I have found D'Addario strings to be well made and have a decent longevity. These are definitely more "mellow" sounding than standard "round wound" strings. That is the sound I am going for. If you're looking for that more mellow sound with less string noise, these can bring that.

BubbaDooba: These strings feel good, D'addario are one of the leaders in guitar strings and these hold tune very well and the sound is great, I think, however, my next set will include the heavier bass strings, for stronger bass notes. These are easier to play despite not being ultra lights. You will want to at least try them to find out if you like that, as a kid we called them "ground wounds" because that is what they are. They are less twangy, but offer reasonably rich tone. These are the strings I've come back to from when I was young, and love them.

EDIT UPDATE:

I just bought my second set of these. I love these strings so much and I cannot understand why more people don't give them a shot. They won't be for everybody, for instance, vibrato is different with them, but the sound and feel are amazing and they stay in tune well. The strings also hold up for a long time with moderate use. I'm using them on my Epiphone Les Paul Standard. I trust D'Addario more than some other brands. Some people insist that all strings come from 1 or 2 factories, but that doesn't seem to be true, as these are different and better than others.

Try these ground wounds/half rounds sometime,...

bigj231: I usually play DR Pure Blues strings, but the last few packs seemed a little off to me. I'd rather not make major adjustments to my neck and bridge every time I change strings. So, I decided to try something else.

These half-round guitar strings are something else. They sound almost the same as a new set of Ernie Ball regular slinkies on my guitar, but they feel so much nicer. The entire reason I switched to the DR strings was they had a warmer tone that really compliments the brightness of my guitar, a heavily modified, maple-necked squier affinity strat with EMG-HZs. I usually played with the tone knobs on 9 with the DR strings, but now I find them around 6 to achieve a similar tone. So it's not quite as clear at the top end of the spectrum (I play through a modeler and a bass amp) but the mids and lows are very close.

Now lets talk about the merits of these strings. First off, they feel super smooth. What turned me off of D'Addario's in the first place was how rough the strings were, and how many D strings broke halfway up the neck. I'm happy to report that the strings haven't broken, and are easily the smoothest strings I've ever played. They actually feel better...
