Sarah Balla: I’m sure there are quite a few people who would have at least one issue with this product, but as someone who bought it specifically for a project, I’m not one of them. Having said that, if I had purchased this for use as-is, it would be returned immediately. Despite its flaws, I ordered this for the hatchet head and not to be used as a tomahawk.

If you’re willing to put the time in, it’s great for a project. I fashioned mine into a traditional Hungarian walking stick called a “Fokos” or, in English, a shepherd’s axe. It worked great for this purpose and, since the head was getting pulled of the handle it came with, I really didn’t care that it was loose. Keep that in mind when you buy one of these. I’m sure that’s why there’s a screw through the side of it that further secures the head to the handle. I can assure you that, when I was done replacing the old handle with something that would suit my needs better, it didn’t wobble a bit and I didn’t need to replace to screw it came with.

I ordered a second one and it’s on its way now for another similar project, though, this time the head itself is going to be modified as well. This isn’t...

TaylorTaylor: It’s a tomahawk, what’s not to love?! Well, perhaps that it’s not 100% perfect out of the box. Out of the box I would give this hawk 4 stars. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still deadly and ready to tackle tasks in your parents basement or be thrown at some stump that called you a little b*tch”. Yes this hawk will work, throw, and probably kill a few zombies if need be. However, if you want a little project, this a really fun axe to customize.

First off, out of the box you can expect a work horse of a tomahawk, but presented as a budget friendly axe. The 1055 carbon steel drop forged head is a tank. It will take a good amount of abuse and hold a decent edge (once you sharpen it as it doesn’t come very sharp). However, this high carbon steel is prone to rust, so they have added a baked on shiny black paint... I know right? Gross. It’ll work, but it’s about as ugly as the lady nobody sits beside on the bus and it’s only going to get worse with a little use and abuse. Not to mention someone took the head and just rammed it up the handle like the slow kid trying to jam the square through the circle hole in a shape puzzle. The handle is a nice piece of hickory, but...

Charles GCharles G: Speedy delivery, great price.

When it arrived, the head was a little loose on the handle. It just got cold, and shrinkage happens. No biggie. I removed the set screw and did a little rasping and sanding and it is now quite decent. Grain alignment is about 50-60 degrees off center, but there is no appreciable run-out, so that's good. It did throw a few splinters until I spent about 30 seconds sanding the length of the haft. Some Danish Oil + paste wax and eventually a new handle are in it's future.

It was also butter-knife sharp. Also no biggie. 15 min worth of file and stone work put a good edge on it. My 10yo and I spent a few hours in the woods playing with it. The spike is great for digging, splitting kindling, and generally wrecking things (we found a trove of fat lighter and the spike was most helpful in liberating it from the rest of the dead, fallen tree) and the edge on the bit seems to be holding up well. It is fairly long, so two-handed swings aren't ridiculous, especially for the 10yo, but it is light enough for me to use one handed, and it's fairly comfortable when I choke up on it to use more like a knife.

The edge grind on the bit is clearly...

Jack Hunter: After reading many reviews on the internet, I finally went out and bought this tomahawk. I knew what to expect when I finally opened the package a few weeks later. The head of the hawk was pushed far up the handle, almost right at the end. The fit was so tight that I had to remove the head in order to file off all the splinters that had come from the handle being fitted on. The head was extremely easy to reset, and the useless head screw was removed and thrown away. Overall this is a great tomahawk, but is not a 100% finished project when it comes. I recommend buying this product, its something everyone should be proud to own.

The DudeThe Dude: This is my fourth item in this cold steel "inexpensive" category. They are by no means cheap but not pretty either. They have sort of turned into a hobby for me and fun art and craft type of thing. I have modified the War hammer, Norse hawk, Pipe hawk, and now this Spike hawk. Each time I try to do a little research and mod them for the time period. I am not saying I am historically correct in this venture,,,it is just my interpretation of what they may have looked like back then.

This one I was going to pretty much leave plain and dark. I discovered that the spike hawk is believed to be an ancestor of the Navel boarding so I felt a dark and stealthy boarding a ship at night look may be appropriate. But after looking at the attributes of a the boarding axe, the two although somewhat similar, are miles apart. I learned that the spike hawk became popular during the French Indian wars. So that is the theme I went with,

The head was stripped of paint and sanded as smooth as I wanted it using various sandpaper grits. I then added layers of cold blue and it brought out a deep charcoal gray. The pictures show it a little lighter than actual color. The haft I already had...
