Lia: A little bit sentimental but I enjoy reading this book, the friendship between this boy and his best friend in Four Legs.

Broomstick6: A sad but sweet story about a dog and his owner. I would recommend this book who is willing to get lost in an amazing world of action and adventure.

Alex Zarycka: I love this book for the bond between Old Yeller and Travis. It's touching. I also learned a lot through this book about the wildlife in Texas at the time of the book, and of the times then (1860s). A well - written novel. The movie and this book will always be in my heart

Daryl N Vandenberg: The only reason for the 4 star review is my 11 year old kid had to do a book report but he could choose the novel. I suggested Old Yeller, but it's a tough read for a kid given the dated language. I had a tough time with the language and I'm 46, it just uses a lot of jargon that is very antiquated. That's not the book's fault, I just wish it was a little more modernized. Otherwise great book, and I was surprised how close the old 1959 movie is to it, as usually movies stray quite a lot from the book.

LastRanger: What a marvelous story! Written primarily for teens and young adults in 1956 by Fred Gipson "Old Yeller" is a difficult book to categorize. On the one hand it's a Western novel about a family's efforts to build a homestead for themselves in the wilds of Post-Civil War Texas. On the other hand it's a "coming of age" story about a boy who's left in charge of the ranch, while Pa goes on a cattle drive to Kansas, and the stray dog that wanders into their lives and changes everything. Life on the frontier was hard and Gipson's narrative seems to offer a fresh look at the problems a family could face. With Pa away for most of the summer Travis and his mother must deal with the every day issues that crop up; harvesting their crops, tending the stock and dealing with local wildlife-- some of them dangerous, not to mention a half-wild little brother who is a real handful. The narrator of the story is Travis, as an older man looking back on the events of that fateful summer. Fred Gipson, the author, was born on a farm in the Texas Hill Country where he often worked as a farmer and rancher before attending college for a degree in journalism and becoming a full time writer, as a result much...

hfffoman: This is on the surface a slightly sentimental tale of a heroic dog but more deeply it is a coming of age story of a boy living in the incredibly harsh conditions in Texas in the 1870s. It gives a moving and detailed portrait of the lifestyle and the extraordinary toughness and resourcefulness that was necessary to survive. The result is a gripping story that feels absolutely authentic.
Although it is aimed at children it has a broad appeal. My family listened to it in the car on holiday and everyone was enthralled.
Add to that Barry Corbin's superb reading and this is one of very few products I would rate 5+ if there was such an option.
