Linda Pfeiffer: This was my eleventh novel by Catherine Ryan Hyde and I'm sorry to say, my least favourite. There was so much that was unbelievable. How was this young girl so involved in the sport of dressage when her background did not fit the ability to pay for such an expensive hobby. She wasn't exactly high society and her father was a low-life gambler, the kind that owes loan sharks. After her mother died, she fled to live with her grandmother to get away from him. He had sold her horse to pay off some gambling debt and she appeared afraid of him. This girl, fourteen-year-old, Sarah meets up with Faith who is also hiding out from her husband, who seems on the verge of physically abusing his missing wife. She ran away to hide out in her family's beach house next door to Sarah's grandmother. Eventually, they go on the run together, another hard-to-swallow premiss. They barely met and they were off on an adventure to find the missing horse Sarah's father had sold. The story becomes more bleak with sudden moments of joy around the horse named Midnight. If I were a fourteen-year-old girl, I might enjoy the story, but I am definitely not a teen and found the whole book absurd.

Cathy G.: Excellent! What a tribute to the incredible “giving” of one of the two main characters. In addition, how number two handles life.

Dawn E Tieman: I loved the dressage in the story line it was very believable that a young girl could be so good. I’ve seen it before. The suspenseful portions were good, just the right balance. The book left me feeling like there is much good in this world.

Jude M: I’ve read around twenty books by this author and have recommended her to friends. However, this one disappointed me. I felt it was written for teenage horse lovers (perhaps it was). The more adult themes were glossed over, other than Sarah’s feelings being front and centre throughout. Faith, Constance and the secondary characters were just there to give everything up for Sarah. A writing style irritation was that, although the story rested on two relationships - Faith and Sarah’s and Sarah and Midnight’s - the overly frequent use of ‘the girl’ and ‘the mare’ objectified two of the three key characters. Why wouldn’t people use a loved horse’s name when talking about her? Or a teenager’s name? This was jarring.

deb.52: Another wonderful story from Catherine Ryan Hyde.
The bond between Sarah and Faith is believable, emotional and heartwarming. This author captures human strength and frailty masterfully.

Bob Klein: This book is for anyone who enjoys a happy ending. The characters are so real ,even the horse. I think teenage girls would love this story. I am a sucker for a tender hearted story. We all need a little joy in our lives.

AuntieD: Such a heart-warming story of strangers being thrown thrown together by life, only to become close like family. This book hit all the feels for me, but mostly the good ones all the way to the end.
