Cesar: This is a fantastic book. It has a lot of great content explaining why sitting at a desk all day is detrimental to your health and provides many different ways to mitigate the risk factors associated with this. Would recommend this book to office workers or those who sit at a desk for work.

Amazon Customer: This book literally changed my life. By the time I read it, I was having severe problems with vision and in constant back and neck pain that kept me from sleeping. Most of that is gone now that I stand up for work. Moving to a standing desk was an incredibly intimidating proposition, but the Starretts take you through everything you need to know - how to stand properly and realign your posture, how to set the desk up, and how to avoid stiffness, fatigue and pain at the end of the day. It's a comprehensive system... and it works.

Gansey Knitter: Cover was blotchy, so will be sending back. I don't know what it was, it wasn't fingermarks. My guess is that this is either production of the book or storage at the Amazon warehouse. I have dropped a star because of this.

The actual exercises only cover about a third of the book, with some of them being essentially duplicates of Jill Miller's exercises (Jill has written the excellent Roll Model and Yoga Tune Up books/DVDs) - the Roll Model book and Kelly's book are both published by Victory Belt and Kelly and Jill have collaborated). I think Jill's photos are clearer, with close-ups. Kelly's book though is specifically targeted at the office and very much advocates standing desks and much of the book is concerned with this (his wife, co-writer of this book and co-founder of their gym has a business getting kids to use stand up desks). I personally would have preferred more exercises. The book utilises a number of different tools such as foam rollers, balls of different sizes etc and the thing that maybe most people don't have a bar stool (I am short and would never use one of these things, however, it maybe of use for the standing desk).

What's good about this book?...

Jamie Fin: You’ve probably heard it before, sitting is the WORST thing for your health according to new clickbait articles on the internet.
Smokers are expected to live longer than those who spend most of their day seated in an office, even though they exercise religiously on a daily basis.

Do these claims hold any merit? Let’s take a look…

Deskbound Review

Deskbound: Standing Up To a Sitting World is the latest book by Dr. Kelly Starrett, author of the fantastic book ‘Becoming A Supple Leopard’, hailed as essentially the bible of mobility and self-cure for athletes and office workers with niggling aches and pains.

Deskbound is all about the issues associated with sitting along with a large practical base of self-cures just like ‘Becoming A Supple Leopard’.

Starrett’s description of Deskbound is as follows:

“Sitting can wreak havoc on your health, and not just in the form of minor aches and pains. Recent studies show that too much sitting contributes to a host of diseases—from obesity and diabetes to cancer and depression.

The typical seated office worker suffers from more musculoskeletal injuries than those workers who...

daddy_will_fix_itdaddy_will_fix_it: Yes, only 3 stars. I'm reviewing the book as a whole, not just the content. I give the content a 5, the writing a 4, and the physical print quality a 2. Here's why...

Content is excellent. I've got the other books he wrote, they are very helpful and the amount of pain removed from my body makes it worth far more than I paid. About the only improvement I could suggest is more sketch overlays that indicate the area of focus, direction of motion, things like that. I sometimes have to re-read the text 4 or 5 times to try and figure out the motion implied in the photo or series of them. Sketch lines down the spine and arm or leg, little angle symbol or curved arrows help me to understand very well. I still give it a 5 because maybe I'm just a visual learner and need that kind of thing, maybe most people can just "get it" from the words.

The writing style just isn't for me. It's not bad, it's conversational, and I get why. This is not a textbook. (I think the content could be re-written as a most excellent one.) Repetition bugs me. I know I need to re-read things to understand. Seeing the same phrases written out over and again may help some people, but doesn't make...

Scott Iardella, MPT, CSCS, CISSN: First, this book is much more than just a message about standing up and moving more. I was honored to receive an advanced copy and the book is amazing, very practical, and essential for people living in modern times. Unfortunately, many people have literally become “Deskbound.” This book is a powerful solution to that problem.

The book offers immediate solutions to the issues associated with static sitting postures. The health consequences of sitting are a significant problem in today’s world and anyone who remains seated for long periods is causing problems in the short term and long term.
Static sitting is an "orthopedic mess."

Deskbound is beautifully organized and visually represented, which I’ll get to in a minute. I should also mention that this book is much different from other books I’ve read on the same subject - it’s extremely “actionable.” While there are mobility “fixes” in the book, Deskbound expands on mobility concepts from Supple Leopard and presents things in an entirely different way.

The book is also not a light read. It’s extremely comprehensive and more “textbook-like”- as is its predecessor, Supple Leopard....
