Kimberly: Great for my dogs diabetic glucose check.

Shopaholic: I was using the Alfatrak II system because my vet strongly recommended it. It is easy to use and as far as I know it's accurate. I'm not a fan of having to calibrate it for every new batch of test strips but it is what it is. My problem with this whole system is the price of the test strips. I can't understand why these are now over $70 for 50 strips. No thank you! I switched to a human meter and have learned the difference in the test results. Now the test strips only cost me $9.00 for 50 strips. This difference is just ridiculous. Alfatrak is going to price themselves out of business. FYI they are now moving to an Alfatrak III so good luck getting test strips for the Alfatrak II. You'll have to start all over again.

Paul Lazarro: These test strips more than pay for themselves. One of my cats is diabetic, and until June 2015, I was home-testing him using a One Touch Ultra Mini glucometer and One Touch test strips.

Although the One Touch strips require very little blood, I was going through them at a budget-busting pace because what's ''very little blood'' for a human can be hard to obtain from the outer ear of a cat. On a bad day, I would have to discard perhaps 5 or more test strips because of error messages from the glucometer. At more than $1 a pop, that hurt.

These AlphaTrak 2 test strips are amazing in their sensitivity to just a speck of blood. Almost every time I test my cat, I get a BG reading on the first try, using tiny blood samples that wouldn't come close to satisfying the One Touch system. I figure to save hundreds of dollars a year using these, because my cat is on a modified version of Dr. Elizabeth Hodgkins' Tight Regulation protocol, and I test him three times a day. (You may want to check out her book, "Your Cat," if you and your vet are having trouble regulating your cat's BG. My cat's fructokinase values have dropped from the 500s to the 300s thanks to her method of...

LubDub: My cat was diagnosed with diabetes in early spring. I test my cat daily, usually 2-3 times a day. These test strips are roughly $1 per strip (based on the total cost of the test strips), which is cost prohibitive. The butterfly design, which seems good in theory, has meant that if the blood is not in a bubble than the test strip cannot read the blood, and therefore the meter reads it as an error, which means the test strip is wasted. Finally, the test strips are not easy to acquire outside of online retailers. Amazon and ADW Diabetes are the only stores I can find and purchase these test strips at a reasonable cost and with fast shipping.

I devised a plan and conducted some online research. I concluded that the test strips derived for animal use are most accurate. Based on that info, I decided to compare cheaper test strips against the more expensive and error prone AlphaTRAK test strips.

I purchased:
Wal-Mart ReliOn Confirm/Micro Blood Glucose Test Strips
OneTouch Ultra [Blue] Test Strips
Freestyle LITE Blood Glucose Test Strips [Butterfly Design]
*Each time I tested, I used the AlphaTRAK test strip and then the comparison brand sometimes with AlpaTrak...
