These center punches are probably good for light work. I would guess sheet metal or aluminum, anything harder than that they don't make a useless tiny dimple or none at all. The springs are just not up to the task.
They also are all not reliable as it may take several presses to make the mechanism strike. This was made much better with a bit of oil, but still not 100% reliable.
I was hoping to use these to punch 1/4" mild steel... Not a chance. and it appears that a hardened steel center punch, the sort that you strike with a hammer is my best bet. Unfortunately, it appears that a hardened steel rod with a shallow cone ground on one end costs 4 times the cost of these punches. Well I guess it will last forever.
Not recommended.
