Schwack_Daddy0: I bought this reel after doing some research on good baitcasting reels for the money. I paired this with a Dobyns Colt 734C as my first foray into the world of baitcasting. I initially had a few birds nests when learning how to use this reel, but now that I’m comfortable with the reel, it’s really a good, reliable reel. I have managed to land some decent sized redfish and flounder on this reel, and it held up beautifully. The casting is pretty smooth, but It could be better. I picked this reel up for around $55, so at that price point, it was a great buy. I’d still consider buying at the $80ish price range due to its overall well rounded performance for the price.

Emmett L Thomason: Bought this to replace a very old Shimano Curado 300 that the salt air (and admitted neglect) finally destroyed. Did some research online about the latest crop of baitcasters and found a number of favorable reviews for this reel. Not wanting to spend a ton, this was a great balance of good reviews and reasonable price.

Received the reel quickly and spooled it with 30lb braid and 12lb fluoro leader. I fish in rock lagoons, so I need sensitivity and quick response to keep the fish out of the rocks. Installed on my 8' MH rod and hit the water.

With very little adjustments, medium brakes, first cast went a mile with a 1/4oz Texas rigged grub. Of course, had a few overruns, but nothing catastrophic during the day, but was very pleased with how this little reel performed. I do believe it was casting smoother and further that my Curado ever did. Very lightweight and compact, drag held up great and I was able to catch some nice bass that day. Very happy with this "value" reel. Would highly recommend!

Thompson Nguyen: Had trouble at first with the reel. But in love with it now that I got the swinging motion down when casting. Very different than a spinning in that you don’t have to use all your might to whip it for distance (potentially get back lash if you did). If you have it at the right settings and lure weight, it should cast properly. Feels great in my hands, love the rubber handles. I have really no reference to compare it to other reels. But so far it served me well.

If anyone is curious, I got the 2pc MH uglystik gx2 as the casting rod for this reel. Great rod 👍

scones007: I love how easy it was to setup, I just adjust the brake hold the rod so the tip is pointing away from you/ with the setup your going to use adjust the round tension or brake know until the line slowly starts to drop. That’s it push the lever down hold your line with thumb on spool as you cast and rod is about45degrees raise your thumb . Raise sooner or a little later depending what works best for you. If adjusted right should rarely get a birds nest. Braided line seems to cast much farther and is smooth and quiet. Just use a floral carbine or monofilament leader. I am using a 6’6” - 7’ ugly stick also got one on my telescopic rod, very happy with purchase .

The Tech Guy: Fishing reels are line golf clubs or hockey sticks, once you find one you like, it's hard to switch to something new.

My favorite reel for the past 30 years has been a Daiwa SpinCast reel I've had since a teenager. After 30+ years the reel started jamming frequently and finally packed it in forcing me to buy a new reel.

I've used other spincast and spinning reels in the past but didn't really like them so I thought I'd take a chance and try a Baitcast reel and see if I like it.

After doing some research I decided to buy this Abu Garcia Silver Max reel as my first Baitcaster and I'm glad I did.

The quality of this reel is outstanding and while it's moderately priced - it has similar features to reels costing 2-3x times as much.

When I first started using this reel, I was very frustrated and almost sent it back. As a novice baitcast user I didn't know how to adjust the controls properly and I was getting frequent birds nests and line jams. This was something I wasn't used to with spinning or spincast reels. The instructions supplied with the reel described the controls but didn't really go into depth on how to adjust the reel. I read some articles...
