Debbie: This is the 6th book in the Outlander series. It is a large book, like most of the other books in the series.
The book is a continuation in the lives of the Frasers, their families, friends and tenants.
The Frasers are now in the throes of the beginning of the American Revolutionary War. So much happens in this book, to try and condense it into a review will not do it any justice.
I love these books and how much detail that goes into writing them. Some people don’t like large, long books so this series might not be for them.
Before reading this book I would recommend reading the previous books to become familiar with the characters and their backstory.
I would recommend this book to anyone who has read the previous books and enjoys becoming immersed in a book with great depth with many characters and storylines.

Kevin: This is instalment six of the authors Outlander series. I found the previous two books in the series hard going so I felt I was taking a big risk in taking this very long book for my holiday read. But I was pleasantly surprised and the story got back on track with good historical content of life in America in the 1700's especially the confusion on whether you were a Royalist or a Republican. As James's wife is a time traveller she knows which side her husband should be on but to do this James has to turn his back on his fellow Scottish Highlanders.
I do think the author researches historical facts then weaves them into her story but there is nothing wrong with that as she does it very well. The time traveling is of course pure fiction and conveniently Brianna and her family are able to travel to an exact date in the future to save their baby where others have ended up killed or in a different time (I presume in the future they will be traveling back?) and they never seem to meet anyone from the 21st or 22nd century which would be interesting.
Again recommended for Outlander followers

Ornella: By now this has become such a comfort series for me that every time I pick one of these thick boys it's like receiving a warm hug. Which feels paradoxical to say, I know, because the characters in this book are never comfortable. Not for long at least.
This six book is set in 1772 and covers 4 years of adventures, or misadventures should I say, of our beloved Fraser-McKenzie family.
It is a LOT of time to cover and consequently, a LOT of stuff happens. A lot of it was interesting to read because it deals with the igniting of the American Revolution and the relationship between the English and the Indian tribes. Suffice it to say there's a lot of political and military talk which I don't usually mind but considering this was 1400-ish pages, there were times when it got a bit tedious.
As always, I really enjoy the focus on Claire's activity and practice and her explanations of plants and their different uses. This time we also have Brianna's engineering creation too which I didn't get in earnest but was fun to read anyway.
Reading these books really puts the romantic out of time travel because reading about what poor Claire goes through just because she knows things. A...

Tbascoebuzz: How incredible is the emotions summoned by the force of these books? The feelings that they stir blind-side me! Ms. "G" spins such a compelling, emotional story of clans, family, tribes, nations, customs, spirit, traditions and children.
By now, the 18th Century has become Claires' time. In her mind, she's no longer from the future. She's transisted to the "now" of Jamies' time. Her former life has become unreal and remote - - the thing of dreams.
This sixth installment of this fabulous epic "OUTLANDER" adventure connects the previous book (Fiery Cross) to the next installment (An Echo in the Bone) smoothly. The Revolutionary War has begun and Jamie finds his loyalties challenged.
All the books hold so much adventure and wonderfully detailed historical information...It's now 1776...Brianna & Roger Mac have successfully gone back to the 20th century with their children. Yet they follow Jamie and Claire, staying abreast of their travels and activities.
Jamie has always been a Warrior and a soldier most of his life with a mind of an educated gentleman and a soul of a barbarian. Now he's approaching his early-50's... Wisdom and good sense has tempered...

Jana L.Perskie: Diana Gabaldon's "Outlander" series is without a doubt my favorite in all fiction. (I consider J. R. R. Tolkien's "Lord of the Ring" trilogy to be in a category of its own). I had been hoping for another novel about the fabulous time-traveling Fraser family but thought "The Fiery Cross" would be the last. Needless to say, when I heard that a sixth book was in the works, I reread my already well-worn copies of the first five installments, and pre-ordered "A Breath of Snow and Ashes." I must say that Ms. Gabaldon is the only author I know of who is able to maintain her storyline, the tension and excitement, through thousands of words, and six novels, over a period of fifteen years. She continually invents new adventures, accurately recreates history, and allows her characters and their relationships to grow to extraordinary depth. I can only say BRAVO(!), as she has yet again come up with a winner.
As Gabaldon fans know, Claire and James Fraser have weathered more storms than most. They crossed oceans and centuries to make a life together. Readers were first introduced to Jamie and Claire in "Outlander," right after Claire made the voyage from peaceful 20th century Scotland...
