dabudo: Read this book! Read all of his book! He'll send you recipes if you do. All of Mr. Pargin's books are laugh out loud funny. All of Mr. Wong's books are laugh out loud funny. (I wonder if they ever get confused about who they are). Anyone who can make cannibalism funny is a must read. (Anyone who finds cannibalism funny might need help). Seriously, you will truly enjoy this book.
Apologies to Twilight Zone.
Apologies to either Mr. Pargin or Mr. Wong if either of you get inundated with requests for recipes.

Kindle Customer: It seems harder and harder in the days of electronic publishing to find books of a very high caliber. This book (as well as the first in the series) are a great blend of big action and snarky humor, as well as some sideways satire of social media and folks putting way too much of themselves online. These two books were a great find, I think the 3rd book will be out before the end of the year. Dark, funny and had me laughing out loud when reading, not something I normally do. Looking forward to more!

Stephanie: Look, I'm just trying to click bait you into getting the book. But honestly, I loved the first one, this second is as fun to read. Looking forward to start the third.

Allen Vincent: If you are a fan of David Wong/Jason Pargin, you will love this book. If you don’t know who that is but are a fan of dystopian ultra violence, dark humour and belligerent cats, you will also love this book.

Dr. Mark Green: While the book has an enjoyable plot and engaging mystery, and the unique protagonist Zoey Ashe - a regular person who unexpectedly inherited a huge criminal/business empire in a cyberpunk setting, and so who is uniquely both powerful and relatable at the same time - continues to be appealing. I've seen the book described as being about toxic masculinity, but while it's mentioned a few times it's never really explored or resolved. Like the later parts of the first book, it's mostly about the consequences of power and the complexities involved in having it. And in spite of the title - "punching the future" - suggesting a major change, the actual plot scale is relatively small.

But there's a major problem. This book relies far too much on the device of hiding something from the reader that both Zoey (who is supposed to be a viewpoint character) and the other characters all know. No sooner do you get out of the first section - which both does this and actively misrepresents the views characters have to hide the fact that they know things the reader doesn't - then the book starts to mention "Zoey's halloween costume" multiple times while carefully avoiding mentioning what it...

Raven Reviews: David Wong creates a vision of the future that is both wondrous and depressing, ridiculous yet terrifying, and amazing yet familiarly banal. Into this he drops Zoey Ashe, a twenty-three-year-old barista turned quasi-criminal corporate boss who's so achingly relatable that she's very nearly a completely useless thriller protagonist. Luckily she has an entourage of some of the most dangerous, cunning and charming people in Tabula Rasa at her side. Facing an army of internet trolls who, distressingly, might also be an actual army armed with hellishly irresponsible future weaponry, she'll need to outmaneuver the cult-like vitriol of people who hate her for being rich, powerful and female. And fat. Can Zoe triumph over the worst of humanity without becoming a monster herself?

Eric Juneau: It’s nice to read something that’s just a cleanly written, fun story that’s not trying to be a five hundred page epic or engineered toward a movie option.

I think this one’s better than the first (“Futuristic Violence and Fancy Suits”) because I found it hard to wrap my head around the world-building and who they characters were (they all play the same role). Maybe now I know what this world is and what platform we’re standing on. The first one had a high-ish learning curve. This one doesn’t.

The basics? We’ve still got Zoey Ashe, a no-name millennial who inherited a city (essentially) after her mob boss father died and left everything to her. That includes all his businesses (legit and illegit), employees, mansion, and personal entourage of elite black ops bodyguards.

And the enemy? This time it’s something a little harder to fight–a throng of anti-woman incel supremacists. That makes the threat sound trivial, but not in a world where they sell cybernetic implants and homing beacons at Walmart. It’s a timely theme–how long and how much are you going to let these cyberbullies control your life. How much power do they really have? How...

A. Customer: I love the first book in this series. It is one of my favorite books of all time. I was super excited the sequel was coming out, and ordered it the day it became available on pre-order. I looked forward to it coming all throughout the COVID-19 quarantine.

My expectations may have been too high. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed this book, and there were moments that made me laugh out loud. I’m glad I bought it, and I recommend others buy it too. David Wong/Jason Pargin is an excellent author, and I have all of his books, some in multiple formats. But the non-stop action of the first book isn’t here; the beats are not as well paced. The main relationship of the first book, the dynamic between Zoey and Will, is played down in this book, to its detriment. The plot was weaker. Not to give too many spoilers, but there can only be so many false alarms before the tension of the books is lost. Toward the end, and this just pains me, I just didn’t care. And I wanted to care because I loved the characters and the first book so much! Echo gets more space this time around, often in places it would seem Will would have been in book one, yet since she’s a less interesting...
