Linda: The Vermitek worm composter is a high quality product. Plenty of room to expand and sturdy, I found the instructions confusing as I received pieces that were not described in the instructions. Also the picture of the white opaque piece that fits into the composter lid was pictured upside down.

Once I put the cover on my bin I got some mold growing. No harm done but mold should not happen. The setup instructions said to put a piece of cardboard in the bottom of tray #1. But no liquid can get to the liquid collection bin as cardboard absorbs it. The cardboard sheet also limited air flow. After watching a YouTube video I learned that the two thin white sheets of porous material are to use in place of cardboard to cover the bottom of tray #1. The other sheet goes under the first bin on top of the liquid collection bin. This allows the liquid produced to drain into bin with spigot while preventing worms from moving down or escaping as well as increasing air flow throughout the unit. Today I will switch out the cardboard.

The other issue was the coconut coir brick took 2 days to break down. I used the claw scraper (provided) to pull off the wet outer layers so water could...

Violet: This composter is very easy to assemble. You basically attach a spout and layer the different parts. Add worms, dirt, food, and cardboard. I started with 1000 worms from Uncle Jim, which is 1 pound of worms (compost about .5 lb per day) definitely recommed purchasing worms from them.

I followed the instructions that came with the kit, and day 3 I had worms slithering on my laundry room floor every time I checked on them. After more research, I think either 1) their exceptionally traumatic ride through the mail (y'all, I've never seen a box so crunched, they had to tape it together, covering the airholes) meant they needed a little longer than average to settle, 2) my washer and dryer vibrations freaked them out (laundry day...family of 4), or 3) soil slightly dryer than it should have been. I blended some food for them, adding some watermelon to their smoothie, and they seem very happy!

There is a YouTube video mentioned in a another review here that uses this composter, and he uses a layering system. During the phase when my worms were escaping out of the bottom using the method described in the user manual, I decided to mimic his bottom layer, having shredded...

SophieSophie: Easy to set up, I think, if I am doing it right. I have it in my house since it’s cold outside. So far, no smell and not too much mess. Ok so I’ve had this for only 10 weeks so maybe l am not patient enough, but I am not seeing how this works. I stopped using the V board because the worms would crawl on top of it. The “board” was hard to remove with them stuck between the V board and the lid. I didn’t want to injure them. Then they would crawl around on the inside of the lid, making babies, dropping castings, and making a mess when the lid was removed. I read someone does not use the lid, and read someone else uses the worm blanket. So now I am trying that with a light on all the time. This seems to work better.

Most of the bedding and food in the first bin seemed to be consumed, so I am working on the second bin. It does not stack on top of the first bin like it shows in the product photo. The second bin is heavy enough it is smashing down the soil, castings, and worms in the first bin. When I lift it to see what’s going on, a lot of worms appear to be struggling to free themselves from being crushed. I guess I better try and remove them. Why don’t they crawl...

Steve: I recently just changed the sheets of brown paper on top, to one single cut out of cardboard, this prevented the worms from getting trapped in between the sheets of paper. They truly do eat half their body weight in a day if they're environmentally happy. I keep coffee grounds from the capsules, and vegetable scraps from supper prep or leftovers in a Tupperware to freeze. Whatever the worms can't handle, gets frozen for later on. No such thing as food waste now. If you rough chop your leftovers they will make quick work of it. Especially bananas!

Colleen Lapello: The unit is well made with the stackable trays. The ant protection feet are a great idea. Spout assembly is very good. The worm saver in the bottom works well. Depth of the trays are also very nice. Accessory items are great and useful. Coir mat for flying insects is great idea, and also absorbs condensation. The bottom shape and support legs are excellent and sturdy. The only issue I have is with the lid. It is difficult to bend the plastic tray to insert into the lid, but eventually went in. The little tabs that holds that tray on are not sturdy. They have crease lines where they attach to the lid, so they will possibly break when I have to clean and remove the lid insert. The shape of the lid is probably designed to facilitate evaporation, as there are very small holes drilled in the lid for air circulation. If the lid was flat, it would be of greater use to me, so I could set items on top of the lid for storage. I live in a tiny home, where you have to utilize every inch for storage. The item was listed incorrectly by seller that they made an error with shipping cost. Once I placed order, they cancelled it, and I needed to write to company regarding this. I was contacted, and...
