SabrinaSabrina: I had a OXO countertop compost bin but I had to empty it daily at least and I felt bad that only about half the bag was being used. This is my solution. Im so happy with this bin, love the cute design on top, love the filter and lid and love how I can fill my bag all the way up and feel less wasteful that way. Thanks to the reviewer that mentioned the little clips to hold the bag in place! It works perfectly!

MadisonMadison: I love this bin. It’s the perfect size to hold food scraps for a week, fits nicely on my counter next to the sink, and the filters really do keep it from smelling.

I use a compostable liner, which the little clips hold in place and prevent from sliding down into the bin. I do find myself having to take care not to lose the little clips when I empty the bin each week as they are not attached, but if I’m careful to remember where I set them it’s not a big deal.

Everything is sturdy, the handle makes it easy to carry outside to the compost bin, and it’s easy to wipe out any moisture each week before I put in a new liner.

It also came with a helpful instruction sheet about getting started in composting and I cut out the dos and dont’s and taped it to the front as a helpful reminder.

Bernbaby: I recently had a compost bin failure so I was looking for a bin that would be sturdy and that the lid would be convenient. Both things were present in this bin. Bags fit well and the lid is easy to open and close so you don’t have to handle it too much. Would recommend

I have no life: I just bought three of these and I wasn't really sure what to expect from a plastic bucket that cost $50. One of the lids on the bucket does not close tightly so I see an issue of flies getting in there. The other two buckets clothes nicely though. I would've like to see a design that has The lead closing better all the way around. The other thing that I didn't like was the bags that are recommended for this do not fit very well. When the bag is put in and you push it all the way to the bottom, the top wants to come unwrapped and fall in. And the bag doesn't wrap around the top tightly either. I've looked for other bags in this size and I can't find any. Besides those things, it's a nice solid bucket with a sturdy handle, and it's pretty decent looking.

Seek Felicity: I purchased this unit when it was under eight dollars, and I think that is a pretty good deal for what you are getting. My family cooks at least three days a week, and we find that we need to empty the pail every six days or so, which is a really nice change compared to our last compost unit that only held a gallon. We have had zero problems with smells coming from under the lid - opening the lid is another story especially on the sixth day. The carbon inserts install easily and are pretty economical to replace. I love the handle and the ease with which it can be cleaned. It is too tall to fit in my dishwasher, but it can be stored underneath my sink, which is great. From an attractiveness standpoint, I'm glad it doesn't have a lot of excess symbols or designs, but I wish it came in different colors. The green is fine, but I'd prefer a red or dark brown for my kitchen. All in all, we are glad that we went with this. I'm glad we didn't pick a smaller unit, and I'm also glad we avoided a ceramic unit. I just don't see how a ceramic unit would hold up compared to this one.

Amazon Customer: This arrived with one of the hinges broken, but we couldn't be bothered going through the return process, so we slapped some duct tape on it and started using it. So far, so good. It's been filled several times now, including with rotting vegetables from the forgotten about corner of our fridge, and we've never noticed an odour. It's a good size for us - two adults and two small children who eat all meals at home and consume plenty of vegetables, and we fill it in about a week. Besides the hinge, which probably wouldn't have been an issue to have replaced if we had tried, it's been perfect.

Isa W: I've had this item for about three weeks. So far, I really like it. There are only two of us in the house, so I think I should have bought the smaller version. I say this because two people don't make much organic compost, and it would take a week to fill this size bin. Problem is that the biobag starts to break down after about three days. This means the bin is only 1/3 to 1/2 full every time I empty it. Maybe in the summer that will change when there's more fruit and salad waste.

Richard J. Mcgrath: Initial reaction. 1-star. Cheap plastic rubbish, and I'm thinking boy am I glad I already own 3 of those great OXO compost bins. I check the price I paid on Amazon. Okay. It wasn't expensive, I'm a little less annoyed, I'll give it a go. And the wife says it looks nicer on the counter top than the OXO bins, plus 1 of these is equivalent to 3 of the OXO bins in terms of capacity. I guess the OXO is about 3/4 gallon.

We used a plastic store bag as a liner. 1-week later....

I am sold. Absolutely no smell whatsoever. We empty it much less often than the smaller OXO bins. It's the perfect size for the counter top. The carbon filter really works. Zero odor. I was concerned about the non-removable lid, which might complicate cleaning, so instead of throwing veggies directly into the bin, we use a liner. Open the lid, tie the bag, take it out to the compost heap (discard the plastic bag!). Job done, and the bin is still perfectly clean.

Really glad I didn't return it. The OXO bins are now in storage. They were great, and easy to clean, but ironically they needed cleaning much more often because you're not using a liner. And they had to be emptied daily because of the...

bellavs84: I LOVE this bin! I have a large compost bin behind my garage, but who wants to trek to the back of their yard in the dark at night in the freezing cold every time they peel a piece of fruit? I used to keep compostable materials in a container on my countertop and bring them out back once a day -- but even after half a day it would seem that they would start to a) smell and b) get moldy. Based on reviews, I decided to give this thing a try. It does everything I thought it would and more. It fits perfectly under my sink, and still manages to hold a ton of stuff. I have actually been loading the bin up for over a week at a time before I bring it out to the big composter (and I have a lot of compost material because I'm vegan)....and it still doesn't smell at all, thanks to the filters that go in the top. Somehow, nothing - not even the stuff at the bottom of the container - grows mold (I have been using the compostable bags that fit in here...maybe that is why). Can't say enough good things about this bin - especially for the price! Give it a try! It does exactly what it is supposed to do - which is more than I can say for a lot of things. Love that I am helping the environment and...

Jenn May: This bucket is excellent, and does exactly what it should. It is small enough to store easily in the kitchen, but big enough to hold scraps for a few days. Obviously if you have a bigger family it will fill up faster, but for a family of 2-3 you should only have to empty it bi-weekly. The lid seals well and the filter works to keep smells out. It also has notches on the back so if you wanted to hang it on the back of a door or on the wall you could rig it up to do so, which I liked. We use compostable bags to line it for the food, which work well, but if you don't it is easy enough to clean out. Since we have a worm bin, we like to have the food sit for a few days before putting it in so that the decomposition process has started and the worms can feed more quickly, this does the job perfectly!

I saw a few of the reviews where people were complaining about fruit flies getting into the bin, these people are obviously confused. Fruit flies don't get into your bin, they come from your fruit (*fruit* flies). If you wash your fruit well, this will not be a problem. I've never had an issue with these in this bucket, or my worm bin. Excellent little bin to do the job right!
