Mare: Although fumbly to use, this phonetically spells out how to pronounce common phrases from where's the nearest bathroom to can we use a condom. Yes, it really covers everything. A perfect gift for those traveling to French speaking countries.

jeanette. LONDON: been to Vanves (South Paris) and been very good for communicating with them. Yes, in Paris they cab speak english but not all of the customer service are patients enough to actually help out. French are known for being not patient so knowing how to communicate key sentences is a must. This book is amazing!

Spike: Fun simple accessible to start learning French immediately. I like the way it represents French pronunciation using fabricated representations based on anglophone conventions, to make it much easier to understand how French words are supposed to sound without having to hear someone pronounce them for you. Best method I suggest, if sticking strictly to a written book to learn the language (ie no audio component)

Kevin VerberkKevin Verberk: This is a well-organized tool for traveling, or to accompany language learning. Commonly used phrases are great because they tell you how people "really" see things, in a way that Google translate just simply cannot. Not a complete resource for language learning, but good supplementary material.
I like the basic English to French and French to English dictionary, as well as the phonetic spellings for sounding things out.

Zen L.: I purchased this book to compliment my other books on phrases. It's a decent book, however, keep in mind that some of the English spellings of the words are the England / UK spellings, not the North American spellings.
There are also several words that I have come across with incorrect French pronunciations. For example, on page 47 shows a picture of a car with references to the different parts of the car. The English word for TIRE is spelled TYRE. The French translation is PNEU, but they have it pronounced as PNER. There is no R in Pneu. I have found things like this throughout the book. If you know basic French pronunciation you will realize if something seems odd. The book is still informative, but just keep in mind that there are some English differences and pronunciation inaccuracies.

netzien: I have a number of these Lonely Planet phrasebooks for other languages, and they have all served me well over the years. So when my GF decided to travel to France on a vacation, i suggested this for her. I am fluent in French having lived there for many years, but she is not. I have been through this book and the sections are well laid out, and it is easy to find something useful to say in any general travel situation. There are pronunciation guides for every phrase, and it is equally easy to show the book to a native speaker to get them to point to a response to your inquiry if needed. The size of the book is perfect for a pocket, handbag, hipbelt etc. Anywhere you can stuff one of those new oversized phones will easily accommodate this book.
