Mark Serratore: I was hoping to pick up some ways to be a better story teller from this book. I was able to uncover a few good suggestions on how to come up with stories, but they were buried in a lot of self promoting and ego stroking. The author will tell you how many times he has won contests and which stories won contests, he will be sure you know he had a terrible early life, and he will plug his YouTube channel often. I don't read a lot of self help books, so maybe this is par for the course, but I couldn't help but notice how much of the book was about "I". I do things this way. I did that. Here is my activity sheet and here are my answers and here are my stories that go with my answers. I, me, my. Isn't this a teaching book?

The author is constantly insulting his readers. He wants you to know that if you memorize your stories and perform them dramatically like an actor, he (and the rest of the Moth) don't like you (pg. 35). If you write stream of consciousness books, he dislikes you (pg. 64). If you don't follow his story structure, this will make you either a d-bag or a sad sack (pg. 117, 118).

Jevan Goldsmith.: This book will transform your worldview permanently.

Watching a movie, or listening to someone tell you a story won’t be the same.

For me it certainly wasn’t.

I would recommend this book to everyone.

However, I’d especially recommend it to someone with any ambition to be someone in a position of influence.

This book gives you the keys to unlocking the most of out of every interaction you’ll make in the human experience. Without a doubt.

To such an extent I’d argue you shouldn’t even think twice about whether to read this or not.

Just read the damn book.

Guillaume Hansali: We all have stories to tell. Our lives are filled with intriguing, novel, funny, absurd, or embarrassing moments. Storyworthy is about acknowledging these moments and looking at them through the lenses of a storyteller.
They don't need to be dramatic or sensational. They just need to mean something to us.

Stories are an essential tenet of what makes us human. They allow us to share our conscious experiences and learn from each other. They are the currency of our collective wisdom.

But stories are not just anecdotes. Talking about your vacations in Florence and how exquisite the food was is not a story; it's an anecdote and probably not interesting to anyone but you. Stories are not about events or places. They are not even about people. They are about us, our journey in life. They are about how particular events affected us, those 5 second moments that changed us forever. Only we can tell about these moments. Nobody else can. That is also why we must tell our own stories and not the stories of others.

According to Dicks, to become good storytellers, we only need two things; sensibility to storyworthiness and technique. Both can be developed.

George WilliamGeorge William: Créer du lien avec les autres, c’est compliqué. Tu vois un gars avec qui tu veux devenir pote, une fille dans la rue que tu veux apprendre à connaître.

Tu retrousses tes manches, rabats tes deux sourcils avec tes petits doigts, et avant d’avoir pu respirer, tu te retrouves devant la personne en question.

Et tu n’as rien à dire. Tu parles du temps, tu essuies ta sueur, puis la personne s’en va parce qu’elle n’a aucune raison de rester. C’est frustrant.

Tu as fait le plus dur en l’abordant mais tu n’avais rien à dire. Tu n’as pas su comment créer du lien avec cette personne.

« Storyworthy » est là pour pulvériser ce genre de moment. Taylor Esco: In my 34 years of life, I can count the number of books I have read on both my hands (audio books excluded). Whenever I start a book, life inevitably gets in the way and i just stop reading. As I get older, the amount of quiet time I have to myself continues to dwindle; its down to about one hour at the end of the night when the kids are asleep. In order for a book to catch my attention and successfully garner a portion of my precious hour, it has to be good. I am pleased to say that this book consumed all of my free time until I finished it a few weeks ago. Succinctly, it is a wonderful book. If you listen to Matthew's podcast "Speakup", and read this book, you become quickly aware that Matthew Dicks is the Ken Jennings of the story telling world. He may or may not have won the most Moth Story Slams, but in my opinion, he is the best. He seems to have figured out the recipe for telling a really good story. If that is something that interests you, you MUST buy this book. Not only does he explain how to tell a good story, in this book you get to read a few good ones too.

The title of this book is not just for show. You CAN change your life through the power of storytelling....
