Danielle CuthbertsonDanielle Cuthbertson: As an introvert, one who gets pretty drained by human interaction and needs to recharge in solitude, this idea of “avoidance” never occurred to me. That avoidance which was really meant to protect my energy somehow morphed into this giant mountain of social anxiety. I knew something was off in my life but I couldn’t quite put my finger on it. Once I discovered that social anxiety could be the name of my struggle, I found this book via a basic google search. The initial review I read could not have been more spot on. If you are looking for a roadmap to find your way out of the social anxiety trap, this book is for you. Thank you Dr. Hendriksen, for overcoming your own anxiety to put this book together. You are changing lives!

Abhijith S: Ellen shares multiple clients' experiences of navigating life with social anxiety which I could closely relate with. She distills research findings from various labs and helps us gain more clarity on why we go through so much struggle for what appears to be simple activities for most people. She also presents effective strategies in an easy to experiment way. I'll surely be revisiting this book and trying out the different solutions to live a fuller life.

Justin Angeles: Nice methods and great structure to the lessons. Stories and humor were quite enjoyable. It really help me out a lot. I go back to reread this a lot because of the tips. The writing itself had a welcoming and warm connotation that made it easy to read. I don't even like reading but after buying this book, it gave my the courage to buy and read more books like this. It helped me understand the root of my problems when the author talked about things like "The Reveal." The message of how people think about themselves more than they think about others was really liberating in a way. The rules mentioned are something that have always stuck with me. Nothing but love for this author, this book made me smile. There's something comforting realizing that what we go through is shared amongst a lot of people. Made me feel less lonely just reading it even though I was alone haha.

JW: If you experience social anxiety or know someone who does, please read this book. I wish I had this book in my life earlier, and I found myself moved to tears many times while reading it. I first read How to Be Yourself many months ago, and I’ve been nagging myself that I need to write a review because of this book’s importance. Regarding my own anxiety, nothing has made me feel more reassured, acknowledged, encouraged, and knowledgeable than this book has. I've researched about social anxiety, but I feel like I never fully understood what was going on in my brain until I read this. Not only that, but I feel like I now also have realistic tools to overcome my anxiety and be myself—by loving myself!
There are three particular ideas in this book that really struck me as helpful and enlightening. The first is the author’s attribution of the name “Inner Critic” to social anxiety, i.e. the voice in our head that tells us we’re not good enough. The author explains how the critic is misguided and incorrect, and I have found this way of thinking very helpful because I can now recognize when my thoughts are coming from my inner critic and address them using the methods...
