Sheryl S: The devotional follows advent. Very nice job. Enjoyed it so much I bought the Lent one called Bitter and Sweet. Author has a Spotify song list containing each days recommendation. I use Apple so I downloaded them Odeon Apple as not being a Spotify member the playlist was not accessible. Also being an art affection-ado the author recommends an art piece to view for the day. Some of the art seemed a bit dark but the devotional was GREAT.

OCanadaOCanada: We have loved going through this gentle journey to Advent. In particular, the musical and artistic suggestions. The book itself is beautiful. I love the woodblock look of the cover. My only complaint (and it's not really that) is that her vocabulary is excellent ("...this might seem like a perspective antithetical to holiday merriment". This meant spending time acting as thesaurus for my young children. This wasn't a deal-breaker, though. I would buy this book again, and would recommend it to others.

Renee: I've celebrated Advent since I was a child, and one of the things that's always a hurdle for me in celebrating it as an adult (with children of my own) is the complicated nature of many devotionals or other Advent plans. Make this elaborate craft that you don't have the materials for. Read this long passage that your kids will be bored with by the end. I check out before I start. "Shadow and Light," on the other hand, is a genuinely doable, capsule-sized, daily invitation to pause and remember and wait. I absolutely love the "Listen" recommendations - one song for each day of Advent. Thank you for the ready-made playlist, Tsh! Music has such a way of solidifying a truth, and my kids are far more willing to relax into a cozy blanket and listen to some music together than listen to a long devotional. I'm excited for this gracious reminder to pause and connect to the season.

James L. Stoneburner: This book is beautiful to look at and well done but was not what I was anticipating. I have small children and was looking for a way to talk to them about the season in a meaningful way. I was hoping for a weekly craft, lesson etc. for this. That is not what this book offers. It is more of a quiet meditation on the season. It is moving and well thought out but it is definitely geared towards an adult audience that wishes to deepen their faith. It is wonderful for that but was not what I was looking for in this season. If you are in a different season of life and looking to slow down and savor the anticipation of the season or to reflect on how light can break through the darkness even in these trying times, this book is for you.

Hayley: This is just the book we needed for Advent. We were looking for something that isn’t a lot of work or have to “catch up” if we missed a day. It’s open and go and has beautiful artwork and music suggestions. It’s also got alternative readings for those who prefer doing 1 - 25 Dec. instead of traditional Advent liturgical calendar. There’s special St. Nicholas and and St. Lucia readings as well. And the book itself is gorgeous!
