DawnDawn: When I lived in Los Angeles Huckleberry Café was definitely a favorite bakery, so when I moved back to New York it was awesome to be able to buy this book and create some of their items at home. So far I've only tried a few recipes, and note: the lemon cornmeal muffins with lemon glaze are worth the price of the book alone.
Next up were the apple hand pies with homemade vanilla apple butter. These pies were sooo frustrating to make because the dough was too soft to handle and could only be outside the fridge to roll for 30 seconds before becoming too soft. Because I could only roll out one hand pie at time, it ended up taking 2 hours just to form the 11 hand pies you see in the picture at left (on the tray on top of the stove)! Once cool, these pies were very challenging to eat too: friends would pick them up and they'd fall apart in their hands (even though the pies were very delicious).
After baking these I had leftover apple butter and decided to try again with a different dough. I wanted to see the flour to butter ratio of other reputable bakers—4 & 20 Blackbirds and Food52—vs. Huckleberry. What I discovered is that Huckleberry's (whole wheat) hand pie...

SamomomSamomom: Delish! I pre-ordered this book at the end of July after seeing a small poster display for it in their other shop, Sweet Rose Creamery, in Santa Monica. I have a confession to make: I've never eaten at Huckleberry even though I live 2 miles away. I have walked in, kinda....the line was out the door so we passed. That place is packed constantly and that's if you can get a parking spot. I eat pastries at Sweet Rose that they bring in from Milo and Olive, yet another one of their restaurants and they are really good. The cover of this book made me buy it. Glad I did!
This morning I had to drop the kids off at school early. I hate morning. I decided to swing by the car wash to be productive. While I was waiting for a month's worth of dust to disappear from my car, I got a text from Amazon letting me know that my book had been delivered. It wasn't even 9 am yet! Way to go Amazon. I hurried home and tore open the packaging. Goal number one was to find the bread on the cover. Fresh Blueberry Brioche if you are wondering. Then I thumbed through the beginning of the muffin section. Bingo! It was a toss up between the Banana Poppy Seed Muffins or Pear Ginger. I had discovered an...
