Uncovering the Libertarian Legacy of the Little House Books: Laura Ingalls Wilder and Rose Wilder Lane

Kindle Customer: A wonderful telling of the relationship of Laura Ingalls Wilder and her daughter Rose. They wrote the Little House books while dealing with a challenging relationship. I had no idea how successful Rose was in her own right and her attempts to insert her own political views in the Little House series. This book was both entertaining and informative. Now I have to read the Little House books with a different eye.

Bridget Ake: Unfortunately, the glitziness of New York overshadowed our Wisconsinite Rose Wilder Lane's strongest contribution of the Libertarians movement. And another Wisconsinite, Alfred Lundt, was Broadways star during this Ann Rynd attention that overshadowed our Rose Wilder Lane.
So, New York/Broadway/ Greenspan preferred to support a strong minded Russian born and Russian educated Ann Rynd for the Libertarian Movement in the USA. The faded lights of Broadway were at the same time for recognition of Alfred's passing away from life due to his cancer.
Finally, an acknowledgement of our deceased Rose Wilder Lane with this Amazon book.

Kacey53: This was an interesting read. I knew some of the history of the Ingalls Wilder family, but this really did a nice job of filling in the unknown parts. I really wasn't aware of the extent that Rose played in editing her mother's early books. I knew she had a hand in the process, but it seems she did a whole lot more. She was quite an accomplished author in her own right, but chose to let me mother take the credit for the most part. This book also gave a good picture of the history of our country during this time frame. It was a very different time than what one might think was happening. I did feel that parts were redundant and the story line dragged a bit, but for the most part, it held my interest. Fans of the Little House stories who don't want to have their warm, fuzzy memories of the stories spoiled by the facts should probably pass on this book.

Amazon Customer: Buy this book! If you're reading reviews, you're interested and if you're interested, get it! I didn't read or watch the Little House series, it seemed a bit saccharin to me. Reading this, I may have been right; the truth of life on the prairie wasn't all gingham and Melissa Gilbert as it turns out. I come to this as someone interested in American history and the reality of life on the early American west. This is a wonderful multi-layered story of a family who's roots include memories and journals of those early days of westward expansion right up to the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression. This is the story of two women who try to make sense of their family's past and their relationship while trying to keep a roof over their heads by creating a new literary genre; the Saga of the American Pioneer. There's something here for anyone, whether you've read your own Little House books to tatters or whether you spent your time watching Bonanza as I did.

Connie Neumann: I am enjoying the new book, "Libertarians on the Prairie" immensely! This telling of the "Little House" back-story is so timely not only with the current economy but also with the 2016 presidential campaigns and elections. As Woodside described, there was a honing of the pioneer spirit and the idea of individual liberty and responsibility created by Rose and Laura in the Little House saga. And, they only came to that conclusion through battling not only nature's elements but their own strong wills. Just shows that hard work is necessary for the proverbial American success story. Let's hope there is still enough grit and determination in this generation to learn from the past.
