Uncovering Christmas: Unveiling the Fascinating History of the Birth of Jesus Christ

Margaret S.: "Hidden Christmas" is a wonderful book. Timothy Keller discusses the Scripture passages about Jesus’s birth from Matthew, Luke, Isaiah, and 1 John. He addresses aspects of the Christmas story that I had not thought of and gives practical applications.

This book sharpens our focus on what Christmas really means: Almighty God took human form, being born to live a sinless life and die for the sins of the whole world. It is a call to faith and obedience, submitting to God’s will for your life, because Jesus is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

This book was a blessing to me, and I know it will be to you too. It is a book that you are going to want to reread each year.

Jack Kruse: Tim Keller stepped down as the senior pastor at the reknowned Redeemer Church in NYC in early 2017--the church he built into 5000 strong members in one of the most unchurched areas of the United States. Along the way, he’s published an array of books (one of them, Prodigal God, is on my yearly re-reading list) and Hidden Christmas falls in among them.

Hidden Christmas is the product of a lifetime of Keller’s Christmas sermons. This amalgamation covers the breadth of the Christmas story beginning with its roots in the Old Testament, as the Israelites yearned for the freeing savior King promised to them. Whether a believer (in Jesus) or not, a reader will find much of interest in this short read. And I think that’s really the strength of this book: Keller covers so much that there’s bound to be something in it that will give you pause to consider what Jesus’ birth in a manager means.

SmileCo: Quick Tip: If you have read many of Keller's previous books, you aren't likely to find any ideas here that are new or novel. What you will find is classic Keller thoughtfulness and apologetically minded application applied to the Christmas story. If you haven't read much Keller before, you might as well start here. This isn't his best book in my opinion - but it is a solid addition to his ever-growing body of work.

Like other brilliant writers, he is able to take complex theological and philosophical tensions and state them with clarity and simplicity. As a result, I am eager to read anything he publishes.
