Uncover Kauai: The Definitive Guide to the Hawaiian Island

Melissa Simpson: We spent a week in Kauai and used this guide and a separate snorkel guide specific to beaches and underwater features, but the beach info in this book was great. I don't like blogs and websites, I like an actual book for trip planning. This guide had everything we needed, really helped when trying to locate trailheads or beach parking areas, gave great advice. I used it for trip planning and it was with us every day on the island. Very accurate descriptions and great recommendations for all parts of the island for all sorts of activites, food, sites, etc. If you are planning a trip to Kauai, this is a must buy. You won't regret it. This has great maps and pictures throughout, unlike another guidebook I purchased and returned. Drive times described in the maps were also accurate, which helped in planning. Overall great purchase.

Bonnie Caspar: So much info packed into this book! Study the book before you go so you know what you want to do, then when you get on island, download the companion app from the App Store. It is an absolutely necessary, informative, and helpful guide to traveling around the island sightseeing. It is linked to your GPS so "the guide" always knows where you are and points out attractions along the way. We would have missed out on so much without this guide. Well worth the money!

Bill: This was a great reference book. I looked at 3 or 4 and this one proved to be the most authoritative. Really, its the only one you need to look at. Excellent !( although pricing information, even in the latest edition, seemed to be out of date. Not a big deal though given how informative this book was).

Chad: This book was very helpful on my recent camping trip to Kauai. Used it a bit ahead of time in trip planning, but it was mostly awesome to have on hand when we had to improvise due to weather. Relied heavily on the dining section to figure out where to eat. We only ate at places that had an Ono rating and they were all fantastic. The only negative is that I wish the book had warned that some of the campgrounds are full of homeless people, some of which are thieving drug addicts.

Always a challenge that these books can never be quite up to date, so I recommend that you cross check with recent entries on trip advisor. With both of those references you'll be home safe!

JENNIFER CARLINGTON: This is one if the best guide books I have ever used. Easy to use, great layout. Lots of easy to follow directions and I love the authors style of writing, very amusing . We used this book every day and I don’t think any other guide is comparable. This is all you will need for your trip !

gnudung: This is a non-paid review. I bought the Kindle edition of The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook: Kauai Revealed ..., by Andrew Doughty, 2017 edition. I mention this in case Amazon decides to blend this review with ones for Waring blenders or Toro riding lawn mowers.

I upgraded my review and edited its text after I figured out how to make the maps work.

This Kindle book tells you to look in the iTunes store for the app. The app does not exist. There is one for Maui, there is one for Oahu. There is not one for Kauai.

At first, I thought the maps were almost all worthless. I can't read the tiny text on three fourths of them. They say "tap on maps for more detailed view," but a tap only makes them smaller. I tried double-tap, which turns out to be the undocumented key to enlarging them.
The text accompanying the maps should say "double tap" instead of "tap."

The problems are mostly ones of a faulty porting to the Kindle format, and they are remediable. May they soon be remedied, and may an update be offered.

Doughty's research and opinions merit 5 stars in a "dead tree" book, but this Kindle thing is 3 at best (upgraded by me to 4). I have used the iOS...

SNS: Wow. The "blue books" are the most popular Hawaii guidebooks and it's for a good reason. They hands down, have the best layout and arrangement of any guidebook I've ever used. When you open it up, everything is presented in a fashion that makes it extremely easy to break down the different regions of the island. A ton of useful colorful maps are included to further make navigation a breeze. The single biggest advantage of these guides is the ability to pick it up and immediately pinpoint several attractions for a given area. When I used their Oahu book last year, I literally used it as a page by page tour guide to the north shore, Ko Olina, the windward side of the island and other points away from the huge crowds of Waikiki. This Kauai book is no exception. It's full of colorful photos and tons of helpful guidance on things to do, places to visit and where to eat. Granted, these books are hugely popular, so it's highly unlikely you'll be alone at most of these attractions. However, if you don't feel like scouring the internet and writing down or printing everything you find, this is much more handy to have. I literally keep it by my side the entire trip.
