Kindle Customer: This was an in depth story about Ulysses S. Grant written by Brett Baier. As the story evolved in that time period I also could see comparisons of our own. My whole understanding of General/President Grant and developed an admiration for his love of America.

OLD1mIKE: Great book. Engaging, personal and easy to read. There are times you actually connect with Grant and feel his pain. So often, histories focus on the scandals and controversies during his presidency. This is a positive biography, focusing on his contributions. Given the challenges of healing the country after the civil war and his effort to insure equality for all Americans during Reconstruction, its hard to believe he isn’t rated higher than 33rd (2000 ratings) as president. I had passed over this book numerous times. Glad I finally stopped to read it.

mikemacdonald72: I loved reading this book. It is rare to get what reads as a fair analysis of a high-ranking public figure. U.S. Grant may be a hero, but this book is not hero worship. I will admit to cheering for Grant even through his failures.
I could turn around and start a re-read tomorrow. Highly recommend.

Punkmom: Thank you, Mr.Baier, for bringing history to us all with such an engaging way of writing. As a casual student of history, I knew a little about General Grant, and now I feel like I knew him in person. I don't think much of Andrew Johnson. Disappointed as I am with the current (2023) political divide, I have renewed hope in a more united tomorrow. May God continue to bless our mighty yet flawed country.

Amazon Customer: Baer draws a superficial analogy with the 1876 election that Gen. Grant shepherded to a resolution without re burnishing the fires of the civil war. Today’s shenanigans are more a question of safeguarding integrity of an election. The question of who can vote is resolved. The question of keeping that vote pure from manipulated contamination is at stake.

Gully Foyle: The title gives the impression this is a book about the 1876 disputed presidential election and Grant’s role in it. It is in reality a condensed biography of Grant with a couple of chapters on the election. In fairness it is a good biography just not what I was expecting.

Amazon Customer: I enjoyed how the author described Grant and his family in very personal terms and not just all about the war. Easy to read .

John Remsen: Thoroughly enjoyed this walk through a time critical to all Americans. Great insights into the times and the man. We must never forget the lives lost on both sides to preserve our Union.
