midwestshopper: I read this in 3 days. It was an excellent book and I was pleasantly surprised about the manifestation parts of it. I listened to Nirvana and Foo Fighters as I read it and it really felt like I was watching a movie while reading it. 10 stars!

Primoz: A book is a book. It can't really be rated content-wise, as we buy them by choice. It's made ou of paper, so durability is our responsibility.

The Strategist: As a Nirvana fan who lived their meteoric rise and mourned their heartbreaking fall in real time, and became a Foo Fighters lover in the years after, I’ve always wondered what it must have been like to have been Dave Grohl, to have picked up the pieces, moved on and built something great. This is that story.
But it’s not only that. It’s the story of an awkward kid, trying to find his place in the world, who is ignited by a passion that fueled his singleminded pursuit of it until it became a reality. And amongst all of that remaining a grounded and decent human being.
Some of his stories are almost unbelievable. Really? He fell off the stage, broke his leg and actually went back on stage and finished rocking the house? Who does that? Dave Grohl does. Part of the fun of reading this book is looking up videos on the Tube documenting many of the stories he tells.
Yea, some of it’s a bit hokey, that’s part of the charm. He’s a regular guy living the dream, and savoring every moment of it. We should all be so lucky.
Can’t wait to read the sequel!

Josh HendersonJosh Henderson: Dave’s gift to us was an adventurous ride to read! This book consists of sentiment, depth, authenticity, vulnerability, and is surprisingly humorous! At moments I found myself actually laughing which is something I rarely do while reading, it’s Dave’s comedic timing of conveying the hilarity of his experiences to the reader. At moments I also found myself very emotional and welling tears. This book overall is a treasure! I’ll admit, I’ve always typically focused on the “front man” of any band or group, neglecting the other members who are equally just as important; but Dave opened my once blind eyes. After reading this book, I now have a new profound acknowledgment and consideration of all individuals who make up a band. I’m 40 years old, I was around 10 years old when I first saw Kurt/Nirvana on MTV. His radiant blue eyes, shaggy blonde hair, scruffy chiseled chin, and iconic voice that would become an undeniable sound of an era. As a little boy I was intrigued by this man. My birthday is April 11, 1983, so I was just cornering my 11th birthday when I heard the infamous announcement from MTV News reporter Kurt Loder on April 8th, 1994. Kurt will forever hold a...

V L: I’m not a hard-core fan of Dave Grohl - I bought this book for my husband (who is a dh fan!) but picked it up when I had a hospital appointment with a long wait. Well. Now I am a fan - I don’t recognise many of the bands/musicians (it’s not a genre I had much exposure to, although I have now seen the Foos live a few times and have fallen in love with their music). His writing is beautiful - it feels like a truly honest reflection on life moments. I felt as though I had sat and had a long chat over a cup of tea (me) and a whisky (him!). His philosophy on life is one I hope to emulate, in some small way, in my own life - his sense of adventure and continued awe at the serendipitous moments of his life. A fascinating and immersive read that I would recommend to anyone, not just the hard-core Foos/Nirvana/Scream etc fans.

Beguiled By Books: I love reading because I love stories. That may seem like an obvious statement, but so many non-fiction books are recaps of isolated events or summaries of studies. I enjoy non-fiction (probably more than the average person), but my issue with memoirs is that, too often, they highlight the glamorous bits of the subject’s life, which doesn’t make for a great story. It’s the book version of social media. You want the ups and downs. You want to root for your main character, even if your main character is real and you know the ending already.
Books, whether fiction or non-fiction, are meant to be stories.
Enter Dave Grohl’s The Storyteller: Tales of Life and Music.
For the aforementioned reasons, I don’t actively seek out memoirs. But Dave Grohl has always seemed like a genuinely awesome guy, and his music makes its way onto every playlist I’ve ever made. A good bit of Dave Grohl’s music makes up the soundtrack to my life – so naturally, I wanted to learn about his.
Grohl takes his memoir and lays it out in five parts. He covers everything from:
his childhood and foray into music
the singular event that directed the course of...

Saint: Fantastic book! I can't tell you a single Foo Fighters song and only recognize a couple Nirvana songs, so I'm far from a fan, but the stories, the feeling (sometimes a bit cheesy), the jokes, and the Paul McCartney references make this book a solid one. He is really fun, and gives a nice look into the particular life of a rock star who seems to have his feet in the ground.
