CJ: My college-age son has been playing ukulele a short time so I picked this up as a stocking stuffer this year. He started using it Christmas afternoon and is already loving the exercises and aspires to make it to the end of the book! Great for a uke player who is interested in continual improvement.

A lot of the difficulty in learning an instrument is in making the fingers go where they should.
This book helps with that- after working through it, and then again, my fingers feel more relaxed and experienced, if you will, and grabbing chords isn’t nearly as awkward for me now. Even in the first run through of a new song, I can tell I’ve benefited.

This would be a five-star review if not for one thing, which I will discuss momentarily.
As far as method books go, this is fantastic. It does require basic knowledge of the terminology used in music and of music reading, but yeah, that’s pretty much all method books. The exercises are extensive, and they build upon each other as the student progresses through the “weeks” in the book. Get it. It’s awesome.
So here’s the catch, the one little thorn in the side of a product that would otherwise merit a five-star review... Although the book is supplemented with very helpful audio examples, all of which can be played back at various tempos and key modulations through Hal Leonard’s website, the format of the audio examples does not match the corresponding notes contained within the book. For example, the examples for the seven exercises in Week 1 are delivered through seven separate .mp3 audio files, which is all well and good, but in the book, each exercise refers to a specific time marker instead of an individual track (exercise 1 is referred to by 0:00, exercise 2 by 0:27, instead of Track 1, Track 2, etc., as they are found in the...

Great book,
People complain about the format of the audio but you have the option to download all the mp3s which are separated out by the week and day. Each are around 10-30 seconds long.
I would not consider this an extremely beginner book.
I would start with something more simple as this does require some music reading which really isn't taught in the book.
But, this was the perfect next step for me. I've been completing the program at regular speed and I'm now on week 6.

I’m really happy I bought this book. I’m a beginner ukulele player and started taking classes at the beginning of the summer. I played the clarinet in middle school so I have a basic knowledge of music, but not a real big grasp of music theory. This book has a nice mix of weekly chords, strumming skills, scales, fingerstyle skills and licks & riffs to work on for a suggested 20 minutes a day over a course of 40 weeks.
Even though I’ve been taking lessons all summer, the single most helpful “trick” I learned from this book was how to play the scale in Week 1’s lessons. I’ve learned where various notes can be played on the finger board, but have been struggling. My teacher wanted to know what happened that I suddenly “got it.” Putting the notes in ORDER on a scale was my “ah-ha” moment. I’m afraid my uke teacher is getting dumped—at least for a while—this book seems to think more like I do, and I like the mix of skills each week rather than focusing solely on a set of new chords.
There was no CD included with the book I bought (purchased in July 2016), but there is audio access through the Hal Leonoard website. ...

Reese: I like the small bite-sized lessons ion this book. Having a short lesson for each day helps me stay focused on playing every day, even if for only 5-10 minutes. I think it is a good companion to other learning tools and videos.
