kindle readerkindle reader: Howzat,for a review title that appears deliberately and purposefully irrelevant to the item I'm reviewing.It's hopefully somewhat different to the typical title it will intrigue enough of you to read on.

All nonsense aside this is a fantastic book and has plenty for guitarists of all kinds of level,ability and ambition. I'm not exactly a beginner having been playing now for not several years but decades yet this particular book aswell as so many released by Fundamental Changes has something to offer those that are always willing to learn.

Fundamentally,pun intended it's an excellent guide to the skills and techniques that the vast majority of modern players need and be honest the ones we are all trying to master in our own way.

No matter how 'self taught' we may claim to be there are surely very,very few who can't benefit from a concise and well thought out pathway towards the destination we desire.

This book and so many others in the FC catalogue are exactly that. This one sets out to help you master picking,legato,rhythm and expression.

Each one an essential pillar of not just mastering guitar but with rhythm and expression music...

B Jubar: I have been strumming a few guitar chords for years and I have a stack of "technique" books that have all ended up being too complicated and overwhelming, so they're just gathering dust. I've been using this book for a few weeks now and it's been fantastic! Walking through the lessons every day, which start out easy enough for a novice like me, has already made a dramatic improvement in my playing. It's certainly not a magic wand, allowing me to become a guitar virtuoso overnight - but I'm confident that if I put in the work to make it all the way through this book, I'll be a much better guitarist (and maybe I'll be ready to dive into some of those dusty books on my shelf)!

J2B: As a seasoned guitar player with decades of experience, I am very impressed by all books by Joseph Alexander. Some are written in partnership with Martin Taylor - Bonus ! They are practical and logical, clearly illustrated with crisp explanations and on-line backing tracks. Topics are covered in a progressive intuitive way - students can pace their learning and "feel" the gradual progress in their guitar playing. The guitar has vast possibilities in all sorts of styles (e.g. folk, pop, jazz). These books explore that creative space and they won't gather dust on your bookshelf.

A. Johnson: I tend to see technique skills as the tools that allow me to explore music. If I am not facile on an instrument I can't discover what I can do with it musically. Technique skills are the tools and building material to free me to make what I want either from a blueprint (score/sheet music) or from what is just burning inside and trying to get out.

This Alexander book is turning out to be best of the technique building books because it actually has breadth and material successively builds on itself.

Alexander does not beat you up with excessive anything. He talks you through what he expects you'll do and accomplish, gives you an amazingly succinct baseline of exercises and finally suggests how you can expand the baseline to meet your own needs.

He reminds you all the while that it is likely that technique is a means to an end for you, and you need to keep that end in sight.

Picking exercises are great quick workout. In section 2 some of the mixed rhythm exercises are fun little head challenges at first, then great reminders to practice occasionally. Nice legato section... Other books tend to just dump a few lengthy legato exercises in somewhere. Alexander...

Animate Reality: I am fairly new to guitar,having been playing off and on less than a year. I get frustrated and quit for a bit then pick it up again. I've tried many different books and internet videos for help over the course of a year.

I'm at a point in my playing that I can play well many open chords, barre chords, and have memorized the 1st 4 positions of the Am Pent. scale.

Sadly, I've been unable to do much with it. As I have many issues with timing. Its very poor, and I struggle with it. Constantly falling out of time, having issues if going from 1/4-1/8 - 16th notes etc.
Pick control - Pick/Hand co-ordination has also been a huge fail for me. Specifically when picking individual notes and string skipping.

Basically, when it comes to memorizing a chord shape or scale pattern, I pick it up rather quickly. Beyond that its been a tough road for me.

I picked up this book, since it claimed to target the specific areas I need the most help in. And I'm glad I did.

Ive only been at it for 3 days now, but already showing improvement in my weakest areas.Though I still need to do a lot of work, I am no doubt seeing results.

Mr. Alexander does a great job...
