Daniel G. O'Connell: I will be eternally grateful to Eugene B. Sledge for taking the time to write this book. He was a gifted writer and a sensitive man who understood well the horrors of modern combat. In 1945, my father was in the Sixth Marine Division, 29th Marines, and participated in the engagements on Okinawa which Sledge wrote about so brilliantly. I have a much greater understanding of what my father endured on Okinawa due to Eugene B. Sledge's penning these words. This book should be required reading for every human being on earth in order to prevent this kind of pain and slaughter from ever happening again... A powerful, deeply moving testament to the horrors of war and the courage of men who faced death every minute of every day and kept moving forward.

Scott Hinton: The hardcover book was in excellent condition as pictured, almost like new except for the expected yellowing of the pages. It's a 1990 printing. This is an extremely important memoir, and I was surprised that what was portrayed in HBO's "The Pacific" is almost entirely true to the source material. Truly horrific.
