Ravzender: War is coming again and everyone wants Lord Uhtred of Bebbanburg on their side. The Scots, the Norse, King Aethelstan all want the old warrior on their side. All he wants to do is live in Bebbanburg in peace. Once again, your favorite pagan Saxon has to stand in a shield wall and fight. He has learned a lot over the years and his ability to know what his enemy will do is uncanny.

This is a fantastic ending to the Saxon Stories. I enjoyed the series and learning how England came into being, long before William the Conquor came ashore.

Bernard Cornwell has only 15 chapters in this story, and some of these chapters could have been cut down to increase the pacing.

Ho apprezzato molto War Lord.

Art: I had been somewhat disappointed in the previous book, Sword of Kings, in that, despite being yet another excellent read, it had included a number of somewhat extraneous sub-plots that didn't really fit into the entire 13-volume saga. So, I was delighted to find that War Lord, the final volume, not only didn't do that but in fact drew a comprehensive thread through the entire series that summed it up perfectly and tied it up with a big bow. A very fitting and appropriate ending, as well as inevitable in that it obviously couldn't keep going on ad infinitum in the first person.

Sassafras: This is a fitting end to the Saxon Tales and the Saga of Uhtred of Bebbanburg! It is an exciting read; never a dull moment! Even the great Steapa makes an appearance to save the day! Cringeworthy every time the narrator mispronounces his name and calls him ‘Steepa’ but nevertheless, it was good to have Steapa and Uhtred reunited once again.

It seems we’ve come full circle, in this history of England, forged as it was from different peoples with different languages and opposing religions, to become one nation, for the English-speaking peoples who worshipped Christ, to as it now is, a land of multicultural diversity and all religions practiced in its shores.

Makes one wonder if all the death and blood were worth it? These millennia later, it’s back to as it once was.

As with any beloved series, it’s always with sadness I read the last book. This has been an epic journey with Uhtred, Finan, Steapa, and Sihtric.

My chief complaint was that the series narration was begun by Jonathan Keeble, and ended up with five different narrators. Keeble was by far the best at giving Old Uhtred a voice, as all of the books are written from the perspective of...

Deepwater805: It's AD 938, and Uhtred, son of Uhtred is old. He is also the lord of Bebbanburgh, defender of Northumbria, and the war lord that every king since Alfred the Great enlisted to save the fledgling Saxon kingdoms; Christian kingdoms. But Uhtred is not Saxon. Uhtred is a Dane, and to make matters worse, he's a pagan Dane. But Uhtred's oath has always proven to be as strong as his sword arm. And without Uhtred the Danes would have conquered and colonized what would later become England, and the history of the world would be far different from what we have today.
In Bernard Cornwell's War Lord, Alfred is long dead, and the new king, his grandson Athelstan, is trying to unite all the kingdoms of Englaland. Uhtred raised Athelstan when he was a boy, and was the guiding hand that put Athelstan on the throne. But now a new army of all Englaland's enemies, are poised to destroy the young Saxon king, and destroy the dream of unification on the isle of the Eangliese. Once again Uhtred must step in, fight in yet another shield wall, and save yet another nailed-god worshiping Saxon king at the pivotal battle of Withealum.

Good Witch: I strongly recommend this book. Bernard Cornwell is the king of historical fiction. War Lord is the 13th and last book in the Last Kingdom Series. It would be best to start with book one The Last Kingdom and continue to read the story of Utred, of Saxons and of the Danes. The series is also on Netflix and again I would highly recommend it. There are several fan groups on Facebook. The one I am in has over 2,000.000 members which should tell you how good both the books and TV series are.
