RAE: This is a gripping a account of the brave people in the Resistence during World War 1 and 2 who helped against all odds and tremendous suffering if they were caught to ensure that we won the war. Loved it from start to finish

Brenda Rollins: “The Alice Network”, weaves both World Wars and two unshakable women Eve and Charlie into a splendid work of historical fiction that is based on a true spy ring named in its title. It is a fascinating story of two unlikely friends both in pursuit of one cruel and wicked man Rene Bordelon as they search for the truth and ultimately justice with Finn, a Scottish man with his own demons forever at their side. It’s an enthralling read, the narrative is breathtaking, comedic at times, but heartbreaking. Its pace between the dual storylines is perfect and strategically placed making it a powerful novel. The reader will be a cheerleader for both Eve and Charlie, a former spy and a young lady who is a math wiz, respectively as their unification sets the stage for a great novel.

It pays homage to those women who were relentless in spying for France in order to keep the Germans at arms length, foiling their plans for advancement and it was a dangerous task. One of the main themes throughout this novel is female friendships as they grow and change over the course of time. It is an emotional roller coaster. Everyone in the network suffers from emotional...

Cathryn Conroy: Wow! What a book! This is a stunning, page-turner about daring, courageous women made of inner steel who, against all odds, successfully spied on the Germans in World War I…until they were caught. This is a pressure-cooker of a novel that just builds and builds and builds until the explosive ending.

Written by Kate Quinn, this is a historical fiction-ChickLit combo that is unputdownable. OK, the early chapters are a little slow to get going, but this is where the story foundations are laid, so it's all essential. Just keep reading.

The story is told in two timelines that eventually merge:
• It's May 1915, and 22-year-old Evelyn Gardiner of London is recruited to join an elite network of women spies in France: The Alice Network. After training, she moves to Lille where she gets a job as a waitress at a posh restaurant run by a war profiteer/traitor who caters to the German generals and their high-level staff. Eve, whose code name is Marguerite, assumes a whole new personality of an innocent and somewhat stupid French country girl, never letting on that she is fluent in English and German. As she is pouring wine and clearing plates, she listens...

Clem: Although it’s a very politically incorrect statement to make, The Alice Network is obviously a book written by a woman. That’s not a complaint, merely an observation. As a man, I found I enjoyed it overall, but the overall feeling of the book was not really what I come to love and enjoy about reading novels; especially one that might be deemed a “spy novel”. After reading the book, I can’t help but consistently wonder how much better I would have enjoyed the book had the story been told a bit differently.

We start in 1947 post-war Europe. Charlie St. Claire is a 19-year-old unwed pregnant girl. Her posh, upscale mother is taking her to Switzerland to see a doctor who will take care of her “little problem”. Pregnant women with no wedding ring were quite the abomination back then. However, Charlie soon ditches her mother somewhere in England and decides to go look for her cousin Rose in France. Rose disappeared during WWII, and Charlie is so infatuated with her cousin, that she needs to find the truth. Is Rose possibly still alive? Charlie has one lead - a crochety older woman named Eve who drinks whiskey for breakfast and seems in a...

Angie67: As I finished the epilogue of this brilliant book, liberating tears immediately spilled down my cheeks!
Have you ever let yourself be so caught up in a story that letting go of the characters almost hurt? Have you ever experienced a liberating cry? I hadn’t before now. I hadn’t even realised it had been building in me from the beginning of this book, but apparently it had.
And boy was it good to let it out! I believe Eve deserved my cry but most of all Louise De Bettignies and all the courageous women who fought and laid down their lives for our freedom in WWI and WWII did!

Now that I got that off my chest, let me tell you about this little masterpiece!

This is the story of a young girl called Eve who joins the Alice Network in WWI France. This was a network of British spies that was run by a woman called Louise De Bettignies. We follow young Eve during her years in Lille as she spies on the Germans, while working for a ruthless Frenchman, René, in a local cafe! The book alternates from her story in 1915 to present day in 1947. In 1947 we meet Charlie, a 19 yr old American socialite who is encinte and searching for her missing cousin,...
