daintyameba: I picked this up because I had heard about it so many times without really knowing anything about it. Loved it. When I had to put it down for other obligations, all I could think about was getting back into it.

Amazon Customer: A masterpiece in deed. This book had me laughing by myself through every single page. The humor, the characters and all the events that happen around them keeps you engage in a universe fill with absurdity. The same kind of two absurdity one finds in our own home-planet.

yarp: First I think someone should correct the review below saying the book was separated, incase someone gets confused. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was of course a single volume to which there are four sequals with different titles, and of course there are editions which collect all five under the title of the first.
The review doesn't seem to mention that the one he bought claimed to be a collected edition, but that research he suggests should lead most people to expect that if it is not mentioned to contain give books then you are getting the first book in a single volume (not "separated", but not collected with the others).
I don't say any of this in mean spirit, just incase anyone misunderstands that review to assume the FIRST book was divided in five here.
Anyway. the story is great :) excellent. possibly "essential" reading, and it seems to be all here. I bought the Mass Market Paperback editions of the original trilogy (OF THREE) published by Del Ray and, as I should have expected, they aren't so great. very thin covers, very narrow borders which make it a little uncomfortable to read and mean that where you have to open it so wide the spine probably won't...

Roma Watson: Still reading the book

Charles Scott: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, by Douglas Adams, published in 1979 is a thrilling work of science-fiction and highly entertaining to read. It is a well-written book, with a surplus of thought-provoking ideas. The prose conceals flashes of brilliance and unearths pearls of wisdom. The characters are themselves illuminating, with respect to their sharp perceptions, astute assessments of the situation, quick reactions, and outright candor. You get the impression that the story could very easily have been about a likable group of college students who plan to go on a road trip for spring break, so that they can experience all that life has to offer, let off a little steam, and reduce some stress before final exams.
But, alas, the book is more complicated than that. It is more like, what if you know for certain that identifiable flying objects piloted by alien beings are in close proximity, and you have the coded electronic transporter boarding pass device, granting you unlimited access to go anywhere in the universe, right there in your hot little hand.
You find that this quite interesting group of individuals demonstrates great camaraderie and superlative rapport in their...

Martin Jones: I’ve been rereading some of the science fiction that I enjoyed at school, just to see how the future has treated it. The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy made a huge impression on me in 1978. The original BBC radio shows were on late at night. I’d listen sitting on a dark gold velour sofa, in subdued 1970s light cast by a ridiculously tall, scarlet lamp decorated with amber flowers. I recorded each show, carefully pressing Record and Play together on a cassette deck. When the book came out at the end of 1979 I bought it immediately.
Feeling nervous thirty nine years later, I downloaded a copy of Hitchhiker’s to my iPad and started to read…
It was like meeting an old friend again; but it wasn’t all about nostalgia. At school, I just went for a ride. This time, as we flew along, I had a poke about in the book’s engines. It might seem presumptuous to claim knowledge of how those engines work, but I think it has something to do with exploiting quirks in the amusing contradictions of an infinite universe.
The nature of the Hitchhiker power is there at lift off, in the first chapter. Arthur Dent faces a local council official who has arrived with...

Ana rogler: “But the story of this terrible, stupid Thursday, the story of its extraordinary consequences, and the story of how these consequences are inextricably intertwined with this remarkable book begins very simply. It begins with a house.” The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams is the first in it’s series, also made into a movie. The sheer weirdness of this book is unexplainable for one to understand without reading it. It plays with the kind of humor where everything is so random that your mind feels it is comical. Also, this book is truly not the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy itself, but rather, as it explains in the exposition, a book about the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy and those who are using it.
The story, at first, seems normal as a narrator tells us about a man getting his house knocked down. The reality slowly fades, as random names and phrases that the narrator uses are seeming very un-Earth like. It is present day, or around this time, and first set in London, England. Soon after, the setting turns into a fantasy, yet not impossible, world of aliens around our galaxy that we never knew. It jumps into this turn fairly quickly, and persuades you...

Buddhish: I was the generation who should have read this when it emerged. Finally catching up as an old man. You should read this. I heard it described as "Philosophy disguised as humor." I agree.
